But the old Metairie homes aren’t crap cookie cutter homes. It’s not the same as the big tract subdivision with one of three or four designs you choose from.

These are true custom homes in lots worth $200k and up.

For me it is about my kids. Great place for them with tons of kids for them to play with. It's all upper middle class good families and it's in the best school district in the state. As soon as they are out Im moving to middle of nowhere.

What people don't realize is in cities neighborhoods have pools and parks that are actually nice. Kids can go to the hood's pool and swim and play with other kids and the parents don't have to pay to have and upkeep a pool. Best of both worlds.

A thread of this form pops up on the OT about once every three months. There are some jealous folks out there worried about where people live.

Location. Less maintenance, which means more travel. Amazing public schools. The green spaces which I don't have to maintain, leaving more personal time. Like minded neighbors that don't have junk cars on their property, act like stupid rednecks, and keep their house up. Most importantly, the masses love that style, and my property value is booming. Made 100k on it last year.

He is right.

My parents have 50 acres, almost all wooded, and it's very little maintenance.

Grass barely grows and my Dad either mulches or burns the leaves.

ETA: He doesn't take care of all 50 acres. Maybe like 3 acres of it is "groomed"

Actually I find that the developments with the narrow lots like Willow Grove in Baton Rouge to be higher quality than most other new homes.

And I think that Louisiana and SE Texas should definitely promote increased density in areas not prone to flooding.

I live in a 3400 sq ft house, and my house is closer than 10 ft from my neighbors.

The thing is my house was built in 1908, so you can't really call it a mcmansion. I do live about 2 miles from downtown of a major metropolitan area. Our lot is a double lot, so its a lot bigger than our neighbors, just so happens that are house is wide and not particularly deep unlike everyone else.

We love it here, and wouldn't want to live in a different type of environment although I do wish I had more distance from one of the houses nextdoor.
