A lot was giving to me, buy I also more then tripled that by buying up more. Turn most of it over to my kids. After my son passed away, my daughter has it all. She and SIL don't have time to take care of the place. As of now, a good 75 ac's of pasture has 4 year growth.

This was me as a young man, loved living in the city. As I get older, I now want space. Wish I'd bought more land as a young lad!
As I grow older I am glad I live in the middle of a city a few blocks from major medical centers with emergency departments.

This actually turned into a pretty interesting thread. I’m glad that it did.
Interesting observations on both sides.
I live in a neighborhood but have a 2 acre lot. I have neighbors but they are not right on top of me. In my 40s, I can see that keeping up my lot is gonna be a pain in the arse the older I get.
Still though, when I go to a friend or family’s home in a tight development, it feels so claustrophobic. The homes are nice even if they all kinda look the same. It’s like living in an apartment.

I live in an urban area. I can walk to 2 different parks, an indoor pool, an outdoor pool, two rock climbing walls, the zoo, a science museum, a rec center and a dog park.
Yes, but can you do so without being mugged. If so, what are the demographics of your "hood"...and I mean JUST your hood (as opposed to the demographics of the city as a whole). For example, the "Garden District" of New Orleans has a different demographic than the city as whole.

I live in a similar place and I see more 20 something year old women than anyone else walking around. You rarely see any kind of undesirable around. Using New Orleans as an example is not very useful because it has million dollar homes amongst the ghetto more than pretty much any other city.

I just wish they would at least include enough garage space for the proletariat to park their cars as well as pile consumer products crammed in Rubbermaid bins into them. It’s really cool that you have a monster truck and a treadmill with crap piled on it but most of your neighbors could probably do without staring at it when they drive home.

Is this the thread where the snarky 23 year old living in an apartment makes fun of an honest working adult man or woman (with kids) who lives in a $300,000+ home?
I guess I live in a "McMansion". I don't know really what classifies that. So if you don't live in a large home on a lot on Highland Road, it's a McMansion? Not everybody can afford that. I'm sure most would prefer that.
I chose my neighborhood because of me having two small children and the fact that there are a lot of kids in this neighborhood their age. When we were searching for a house, I noticed how many kids we saw out riding their bike and playing in the yard. It reminded me of the neighborhood I grew up in, so we purchased the home I'm in now.

You don't sound sensitive at all

quote:So there obviously is an appeal to living in a McMansion development with the houses 10 feet apart. Elsewise developers would drop the concept. The OP asked what that appeal is. RealityTiger seems to have answered the OP question.

So any time somebody calls out another about an idiotic idea, that means it's about being sensitive?

I’ve read through this thread and I still have no idea what a “McMansion” is not have I ever heard the term before or where it came from....
Can someone clear these questions up for me?

Cookie cutter "big" house that was probably designed by a builder for the purpose of being easy and cheap to build.
Posted on 1/3/19 at 8:52 pm to JohnnyKilroy
As opposed to what?
Spending more money on custom homes?
Now I understand there are homes that go up quick. Especially here in LC and those Horton homes are going up everywhere. They’re cheap as hell. Do they qualify as these McMansions? Or homes for middle class people?
Who and why are we making fun of people that try to live in decent, newer homes now?

it's complicated
the best way to describe it is a very large house that kind of throws its aesthetics together with no fundamental theme
the 2 biggest themes that i find are (1) houses way too big for their lot and (2) houses that have really fricked up dimensions and no flow. kind of like a "well we have extra space, so let's fit in more house (of a different style and with different materials)
