I live in an urban area. I can walk to 2 different parks, an indoor pool, an outdoor pool, two rock climbing walls, the zoo, a science museum, a rec center and a dog park.

No.

But I did...20 years ago, when we (my family) bought the property and built a house on it.

I always liked yard work. So never understood the want to not do it personally. But know that isn't for everyone. Is what it is. I'll take my acres and be happy.

McMansion 101

You're welcome.

Meh, I would rather have an open floor plan with high ceilings and modern amenities, where this guy would clearly rather the nostalgia of living in a home that is 80 years old with small rooms and low ceilings.

Clearly there are low quality mass builders like DR Horton, but I have been pleasantly surprised by the quality of the materials and work in my David Weakley home. I doubt too many would be upset about living here.

Explain it to me.

It's what our (American) society has become as we've moved from the agrarian lifestyle. Most people want to stay in their comfort zone. From the comfort of their offices to the comfort of their hermetically sealed cars to their garage. They are most comfortable inside. So why not spend it in as much luxury as you can afford? And with modern financial tools, that is a whole, whole lot.

I personally prefer being outside of my living quarters and I don't want a bunch of other people breathing down my neck when I'm out there. Or having a problem if my music is blasting out of the Cerwin Vegas in the garage.

As far as yard work, cutting the grass is the only recurring task. With zero-turns, you can cut 2-3 acres in a hurry.

My comfort zone is riding around on a four-wheeler or in the Jeep, picking peppers or lettuce out of the garden, swinging the driver before dark, or some target practice.

It's great we can all live in a place where we can feel comfortable.

Living somewhere with no yard can provide this as well. I am able to walk to bars, restaurants, concerts, basketball adn hcoket games, etc, etc.

That website is about exterior design and materials, not interiors.

From the outside, McMansions are typically ugly

This was me as a young man, loved living in the city. As I get older, I now want space. Wish I'd bought more land as a young lad!

Probably has a commercial mower. I can cut 3 acres in about an hour with my Gravely.

This is true, and also parks. But at the same time, I have a lovely yard and I am close to my neighbors. We have a really nice garden, and lots of birds, beautiful trees, trees, and landscaping.
