Some people don't want to maintain a yard. I personally wouldn't want to live somewhere like that, but it's pretty simple to understand why some would.

I’m on four acres in a 3400 sq foot house. All is good for me, except the note.

In big cities you have small houses and less than ten feet between them, sometimes even sharing a driveway with neighbors.

My theory is people dont know any better. They grew up in a crappy subdivision and they're going with the familiar.

To be able to say they bought a home. No matter how undesirable area it’s in, no matter if it’s shoddy construction, no matter if it’s kade out of ply wood

Typically it’s inexpensive and not everyone can afford multiple acres, custom house, etc.

see it all the time

one guy puts up a fence, then both guys can no longer drive a riding lawn mower between the houses with a/c units in the way

i imagine the venn diagram of people who buy these and people with at least one party who has to have the trendy interior of the time is large. i am not one to preach aesthetics, but i don't get mcansions..way too big

By “custom” house do you mean your choice of 3 floor plans?

Just a guess but probably people who want the biggest house they can get in an area they like and don’t care about a yard

I am building a house now. There will be 5ft between my wall and the neighbors wall.

My backyard will be 40 feet wide by 15 feet deep.
My front yard will be quite a bit smaller than that.

I DESPISE yard work.
We will never really spend much time in the yard anyway because that isn't our thing.

I will probably piss the neighbors off with my home theater.

It is perfect for us.

Can we clearly define what a McMansion is?

You can have acreage that is no maintenance or minimal maintenance. The lack of privacy would be the dealbreaker for me. I'd rather live in a trailer on 40 acres than a zero lot line subdivision. If I can see my neighbors they're too close.

This. I think it's a word used way too much around here. Some probably include 3,000 DH Horton homes in this category.

Seriously though, some areas just don't have much land and when the original neighborhoods were laid out, the lots were small and houses close. Now everyone around here is tearing those down and building very nice houses or gutting the older ones. None of these would be considered cheaply made ugly Mcmansions.

What qualifies as a McMasion vs a real Mansion?

I love my David Weakly house in Cinco Ranch. A little over 4,500sf with a pool, fire pit, movie room, office, and 5 bedrooms. I don't have time to enjoy or maintain property, I'm too busy making enough $ to retire before 50.

Once I retire the plan is to buy property and a nice place away from everyone else though.
