I think what a lot of news organizations are realizing is, online is a loser. The ad model is so screwed up, that they aren't even making enough money to cover the costs of being online. especially if they also believe that free online cuts into paid paper subscription/purchase.
I think what The Athletic is doing is the future. High quality content that is paid by a fee.

Why would you pay for that?

Does the Advocate have anything other than opinion pieces that you can't get anywhere else?

Well, bye.
Not like The Advocate was a quality product to begin with. If I want local news online, I can try WAFB.com instead.

They're doing you a favor by not letting you read that shite pile of a website

Any important news i'll end up hearing about for free.
Posted on 4/15/19 at 1:56 pm to Tigerpaw123
So now fewer people will read their shite "journalism"? BRILLIANT!

Why go anywhere but the OT and Rant for your news?
Posted on 4/15/19 at 2:46 pm to Tigerpaw123
Kind of reminds me of the brilliant decision made by the owners of Tiger Roar.
Is that site even in existence anymore?
People aren't going to pay for shitty service when they can get a better service for free.

Bump
The advocate won a Pulitzer Prize today for local reporting. (Seriously)
Now we know why they’re charging for web access...

This kind of like Scott Innes winning an award for radio?

Probably the worst website on the web

LOL - the paper is screwed.
I have to force myself to read that hot garbage. Do they even pay their reporters? i’ve seen 10 year olds write better - and that includes you Will

That's no loss to anyone with an IQ over 82. Liberal rag that caters to LSU profs and college snowflakes. (I guess that was redundant).

Tiger Roar wasn't producing original content.
Quit complaining about advocate. Experience a Gannett or Digital first newspaper.

Business report pissed me off when they started this, but I bought it. At least they didn’t fluff it with a bunch of bullshite. It’s called the business report for a reason I guess.
The advocate? Absolutely-fricking-not. Not today John Georges, not ever. Get real.

Gannett charges too after so many free articles.
I could see one day that the paywall even going up on local TV news. There is a little more premium ad space in the form of prerolls that can help delay local TV sites from doing this, but I could be coming.
The other big issue is the Associated Press which is a 2 way street. You supply local content to this distributor in exchange for national and regional coverage. At a time it was more of a cooperative endeavor, but as with everything the cost is growing so they are starting to price out some member papers.
Another issue with AP is that you have AP member TV stations that are redistributing parts of newspaper content because they are AP members. Even though online TV websites may only use a portion of the full article, it is enough for a reader to understand the context of the story and not click back to the original newspaper article which would generate ad revenue. Even though some AP content may be embargoed from certain markets, if the restrictions are too small some people that follow multiple TV stations in different markets they will still find that content.
Also, Newspapers have technology to blame as they are no different than the days when the horse and buggy was over taken by automobiles.
Now the internet is over taking the printing press. Whether it’s Facebook or a forum like this, I can read something now and I don’t have to wait for it to appear in newsprint.
Don’t get me wrong journalism still has its place in original reporting about the complex and unknown, but today when I can read it first somewhere else, I don’t need to pay x to read it again by someone else.
I know this may be off topic, but if Louisiana ever got out of the 19th century in the courtrooms in the state by allowing internet streaming of court cases, it would truly be lights out for newspapers because I can watch and listen to what is going and I don’t have to wait for the articles to be written about those cases I am interested in.
