Texting and driving: how did you stop?

I'm notorious for messing with my phone while driving. It's stupid, dangerous, and selfish.
Yesterday, a good friend of mine's wife, son, and friend of the son were killed in a horrific car wreck. Another girl is in a coma and an additional girl has multiple serious injuries including spinal fracture.
I have no idea if she was texting but her car struck the back of an 18 wheeler that was stopped on the interstate.
This has rattled me to the core. I'm swearing away messing with my phone other than at stoplights or in park. Those that have made this decision, how'd you do it? I found myself reaching for my phone a couple of times this morning like I was almost on auto-pilot.

1 close call about 5 years ago.
I no longer touch my phone while driving.

Most everybody has done it, probably when I almost ran off River Road. My problem is checking email. I wait till I'm stopped to text or type any response.

Drive a standard (manual transmission).

Pretty much the only reasonable time to do it. Although cops will tell you its still illegal then.

By exercising the absolute minimum in self control and awareness for the safety of myself and others?
You sound as if this is some sort of extreme addiction

I have a 2017 vehicle that reads the texts for me and allows me to speak to text. Also, it pisses me off so much when others do it that I don't do it. Mothrfrickers going 10 below the speed limit swerving, irritates the shite out of me.

How is this a hard thing to stop doing? play with your dong instead of your phone while driving

Yeah it's pretty damn stupid and selfish and I'm as guilty as anyone. Sorry about your friends.

Few things piss me off more than seeing someone looking at/typing on their phone while driving. You ask "how did you stop?" I ask how the frick did you ever start doing something so stupid? If you can't stop after having a good friend's family killed and his life diminished forever then I don't know what's going to do it for you.
Put your phone in the backseat where you can't reach it or something. At least in the glove box where you have to take an affirmative extra step to get to it.

Never started. The only thing I use my phone for is driving directions and I turn the audio up so I don't have to look at it.
Honestly, there is too much going on outside my car to keep track of anyway. I have no idea why people get bored driving with all the activity out there.

Put your phone on mute and drop it in the center console until you get to your destination.

I almost fricking killed someone. I swore after getting out of that close call I would never do it again. It was an ideal lesson

Lock it in your glove compartment or even more extreme put it in the trunk

It seemed like every car I passed this morning had someone looking at a phone. I saw several that had young women not even touching the steering wheel. I'm 100% against all the new laws for BS but I wouldn't mind Louisiana going 100% hands free.
