Every year the legislature tries to get rid of this in Louisiana and every year the LSP cries until it’s dropped.

No sticker for almost 7 years. No ticket
Just looked up the fine in New Orleans and a "Brake Tag" ticket is $161.
I know it's just a money grab because my so-called inspection for a new tag goes just like this:
Pull up and stop when told.
Give the "inspector" registration, proof of insurance and drivers license.
They stand in front of the vehicle and tell you to honk horn, turn on wipers, activate turn signals, hit high beam.
Go around back and have you put vehicle in reverse while running and your foot on the brake. Place in park and activate turn signals.
Scrape old tag off windshield, replace with new and collect the fee and be on your way.
No checking for exhaust, headlight alignment, brake function, etc.

I've spent hundreds getting check engine light fixed so I could get an annual sticker. Vehicle runs perfect but light keeps coming on even after repairs.
Changed oxygen sensors more than once but keeps coming back to the same issue.
Tim McGraw country gives zero fricks about emissions. They'll give you a sticker as long as you're windshield's intact and maybe if it's not.

If they see you on the road (which is what happened to me) they will pursue you like you robbed 5 banks and kidnapped the president's granddaughter.
I got stopped in New Iberia for an expired inspection sticker at the beginning of January when mine expired Dec 2022. Dude popped a U turn like he was going on a high speed pursuit of someone killing his grandmother. After he gave the ticket and told me to "have a nice day", he looked visibly upset that didn't verbally respond to his gesture.
I did get it thrown out since I have a few connections. But the person that took care of it told me that the cop told the Chief of Police that I was "rude and obnoxious" when all I said was that I thought we had a 30 day grace period. That's all I said to the guy in our 5 minute interaction.

Pressure your state reps to eliminate them in Louisiana. If they hear from enough folks they may do something.

If money is tight or if a person is poor, you think they gonna fix the issues to get the car legal? Or just ride around with an expired one or none all together? This does nothing to get bad cars off the road.,

Man, I love Texas
Eta: inspection stickers are a tax on people who have enough money to have their vehicles repaired or buy new ones.
If a buncha frickin Mexicans can drag a 3 car caravan of busted up shite across the whole fricking country without a damn bit of anything legal and never get stopped for it, why the frick do I need to pay for some high-school kid to check if my check engine light is on? Pull those frickers over and leave me alone.
If I seem irrationally angry, it's because I have received a no-inspection sticker ticket before from a cop who busted a U turn in the middle of a busy highway and ran me down like I had just killed someone's kid. And a friend of mine was killed by a piece of shite caravan car coming unhooked on the interstate.
It ain't got frick to do with safety or protecting the public or anything else.

Frickin LA is not opposed to keep taking people's money for this bullshite.
It also allows cops to stop drivers for a legal reason to get bigger fines and rewards.

Of course Harris County is going to go along with the bullshite emissions testing.

Hey Larry, many people are loaded on weed or drinking while driving. No need worrying about the vehicle now!

That’s bc those small time cops have nothing better to do. Helps them feel important.

I was talking to a NOPD last week at a function and asking some questions. The Mexicans and other certain folks driving beaters and or paper Texas plates won’t be stopped for a license and insurance check. But certain others will be. Or for that matter re anything else. That’s why things are so bad in NOLA. Consent Decree.

Second time in recent months I saw a guy offering to sell blank inspection stickers. Had my kid with me the second time. Otherwise, I wanted to engage him and ask what he was charging.
It’ll run you about $40-$60

quote:we don't have inspection stickers in Texas, but you need to get an inspection in order to renew your registration. There is a system that tracks inspections and it is tied into the registration process.
I thought Texas already didn't have this.

They're still charging you for the inspection you don't have to get.
Not having to dedicate time waiting in line to get an inspection suits me just fine. We can haggle about that fee later.
Disconnecting the requirement for inspection before you can get your vehicle registered is a good start.
