almost 10 years ago whoever the power company was seemed to send get 30 dollars off your bill if you sign up for smart crap sense or something. I knew that they could control stats so I never signed up.

Maybe they should also turn off the EV charging stations during peak hours as well.

So the whole point of getting smart thermostats is for the intelligent raising of temperature when you don’t need it to save money. This program just resets the current temp to a higher temp and the net result is some people aren’t home or don’t notice the change. Others just reset it down to wherever it was before. It’s not like the government is forcing the higher temp.

both my parents were born on the kitchen table of their respective family's house, no electricity, running water, and obviously no toilets, little Brocelyn would have been just fine

The family’s smart thermostat was installed a few years ago as part of a new home security package. Many smart thermostats can be enrolled in a program called "Smart Savers Texas." It's operated by a company called EnergyHub.

The agreement states that in exchange for an entry into sweepstakes, electric customers allow them to control their thermostats during periods of high energy demand. EnergyHub’s list of its clients include TXU Energy, CenterPoint and ERCOT.

Lmao, and these people agreed to that

Misleading. When you install a smart thermostat you have an option to enroll in the program (in our case you get a $100 rebate) and you agree to have your thermostat accessed during “peak” times

That's not near enough money for me to allow something like this.

Good, we need to ban regular thermostats so that people don’t have the choice to use up all of our energy. 78-80 ain’t that hot when you have extreme heat.

Everybody wants deregulation, but sometimes it rears its ugly head.

Side note, you can easily disconnect your thermostat from the wifi and it will work just fine.

Looks like the US Govt wants to handle our thermostats exactly like they want to handle our votes.

You have to opt in for this. So, you know, don't do that.

If running a smart home system just write a routine to refresh the A/C setting every 5-10 minutes.

This is also the easy workaround for a household where your wife changes the temperature without telling you.

She changes the temp up a couple degrees, the program automatically returns the temp to where it was without being prompted.

Ecobees specifically let you opt in/out of energy saving events. These people probably complain that Facebook is tracking them too.
