That’s horseshite. But this…

quote:

the house had already gotten to 78 degrees,” English said. “So they woke up sweating.” Without anyone touching it, they said their thermostat was changed while they were sleeping, making their home unbearably hot. “Was my daughter at the point of overheating?” English said. “She’s 3 months old. They dehydrate very quickly.”

Screams I’m a huge overdramatic pussy

People have been living in 78 degree huts and houses for tens of thousands years. You and your baby will be just fine.

I set my AC to 78 during the summer and the heat 68 during the winter. When it's 90 outside 78 feels good and when it's 30 outside 68 feels warm. In the Fall and Spring I don't even have my AC or furnace on. I open the windows or wear a sweatshirt and use more blankets. I can't believe Texans are such pussies.

People need to learn that it is dumb to use "smart devices".

if it prevents the grid going down for several days or even rolling blackouts it is hard to argue with.

Or maybe Texas shouldn’t have deregulated their power grid.

Why the frick would you even need a “smart” thermostat?? Set it on whatever temp you find comfortable and forget it. Mine has been set to 70 since it was installed. Only thing that ever changes is if it’s set to heat or cool.

You can turn it off when you go on vacation and turn it back on before you get home so you come home to a cool home without wasting money. You can set it to toggle between heat/cool when you go to bed and it’s 60 degrees but will be 40 when you wake up. You can set it to automatically drop a few degrees overnight when you’re sleeping, etc…it’s just convenient features that are obviously not needed but can make things easier

Would've loved to see something like this during the Feb freeze to keep all the poor bastards with electric heat pumps and furnaces offline so I could actually get a little juice to turn on my gas furnace.

There is no issue if you are smarter than the devices.

And since you set the device parameters you should be.

without their knowledge

The agreement states that in exchange for an entry into sweepstakes, electric customers allow them to control their thermostats during periods of high energy demand.

So not really without their knowledge.

They didn’t read the contract like 75% of the posters in this thread didn’t read the article and think the gov did it.

Just pull the thermostat off the wall and bypass it by wiring R,Y,& G together. Now it may get cold in the house but it won’t shut off.

Or maybe the fed gov shouldn't have subsidized 30 gwh of unreliable wind that limps in with 5 gw output when you really fricking need it. Meanwhile the gas generators are expected to earn their ROI operating the 4 days a year it economically makes sense, but get paid nothing to keep their plant ready to dispatch (big surprise they shut down)
