FIL got it and died within a week or two. Also had pre existing conditions that presumably made him more susceptible.

I had it in 8th grade. That’s when it was really spreading around
Missed two weeks of school. The headaches I got were a thing of nightmares I’ve never felt that level of pain. It made me feel suicidal, and nothing helped it. It was so bad you didn’t want to be conscious, I would roll on the floor holding my head screaming for 10 minutes then they’d subside for awhile. It came in waves. Had really high fever, hit 104 at one point.

I knew this trashy old lady who thought she had it but she was off her rocker and a Hypochondriac, and, perhaps subconsciously, she was really just seeking attention by raising concerns about potential ailments. csb

I got it back in 2010 when I moved to New Orleans for professional school. Was having bad fever/flu for a couple weeks and couldn’t shake it. Went to doc and they ran some tests. Said I had west Nile virus. I legit laughed and asked how long I had to live. They said it’s really not that serious for most people and gave me some scripts and sent me on my way.

My dad got bit by the mosquito in 2023. Health has been in a gradual decline ever since. West nile triggered transvere myelitis on the left side of his body, which then progressed into multiple sclerosis. Old man has been fighting for well over twenty years now and only recently decided to start using wheelchairs after a bunch of nasty falls. His was not able to hold himself up with the walker anymore.

The only person I ever knew that had it was a youngster who made a complete recovery after hospitalization. I had no idea until recently that it could do such damage to older folks

My father got it back whenever it was a new thing here. Georgia being "here".

My dad got it in the early 2000's when it was going around a lot on the coast and hitting the news. He got it fishing down near Pointe a la hache.
He was always healthy, stayed fit. He was in his 60s back then and I never knew him to have anything other than a sinus infection here and there.
Started feeling sick, went to the doctor and they treated him for the flu or something to that end (I cant recall exactly). He went downhill. Bedridden at his home for a few days. Hurt him to walk and move his neck. Went back to the doctor and asked about West Nile. Doctor said it wasnt presenting as that, and treated him for something else completely different again.
Goes back home, cant get out of bed. I had a trip planned with some friends that I canceled because I thought there was a legitimate chance he wouldnt make it. He goes back a 3rd time, doctor takes a blood sample or maybe a spinal (for some reason i think there was something they did with his spine). Send him home on 3rd different medicine. He starts improving and eventually makes it out of bed and gets more active. The doctor called and said "I have good news and bad news. The good news is is that you'll never have west Nile again because you beat it. The bad news is you had west nile".
No lingering effects today.

Now a guy from Rayville that contracted it around 2005. WN was not prevalent yet so he went untreated for a couple months. Fella looked like he had aids, jaundice yellow eyes & skin. He was/is a rounder so he had multiple aids test and all negative. Once the docs figure out what he had he made a complete recovery.

My grandmother got it back in 1999. She was in hospital for over a week and they were able to eradicate it after trying several different treatments. The bad thing was some of the experimental medication they gave her ended up destroying her kidneys over time but she lived to be 97. Now I think they have a better idea how to handle it with less side effects.
