The difference is Motown was not only the singers, it was the choreography that went with it. Kinda hard to play instruments when you are following in step with the person next to you. Bee Gees were not known for their dance steps on stage.

By the Disco era they knew it wasn't good for you. They just didn't give a shite.
Meth is what they thought was good for you. It was the main ingredient in every diet pill. And those were sold OTC.
ETA: to be fair, meth is an extremely good diet aide. Meth heads may look rough for their age (or any age), but they aren't usually fat.

Yea... the technical difficulty of that choreography they did is just impressive.
Nobody in ABBA could ever hope to match a live stage performance of the Temptations and the Four Tops.
Guess they have to settle with being talented enough to write their own songs instead.
ETA: and if you're being honest, Stevie Wonder is the only Motown musician on par with the BeeGees when it comes to creating music.
Almost every other Motown act were singers whose songs were written by someone else.

I turned 18 in 1978. Fresh out of high school, I could drink alcohol. I had been driving since I was 15, legally. I landed a job making $8.25 an hour which was huge back then. I had a one bedroom 800 square foot apartment that was $225 a month. I bought a brand new 1978 Jeep CJ5 golden eagle edition. Payment was $117 a month and insurance was like $43 a month. Gas was $0.55 a gallon. A large pizza and a picture of beer with salad bar at Pizza Hut was less than 10 dollars. Pack of cigarettes was 35 cents. Southern rock was my music of choice but if you wanted to hook up you had to go to the discos. No fake titties, no tattoos, full bush. Landing strips were starting to become popular. What a time to be alive. I miss it everyday.

Jimmy Carter crashed the economy in 79 with real fallout being felt into 1980. I ended up joining the Navy in January of 1981. Really just wanted to see the world and I did. Lebanon and Libya early '80s. Panama and Grenada. First Gulf War. Serbia and Bosnia mid-90s. Ukraine and the Stans late 90s. Then 9/11 and Iraq. Retired in 2007. What a ride. Spent time in 43 countries on every continent but Antarctica.
