There’s some “televangelists” that actually use the ability to reach a lot of people correctly, but there are a lot that use it for their own enrichment or fame.

The easiest way to tell is by the words they are preaching.

Pecker-this is before your time, but the late evangelist Oral Roberts used to have a Sunday morning tv show where he pleaded for money with a theme song that promised that "something good is going to happen to you" that would just set my old man OFF, lol.

I've heard of Oral Roberts but don't know much about him

Creflo Dollar (his real name) is one of my favorites. Dude told his church that God wanted him to have a $65 million private jet.

I've been pretty plugged into the evangelical movement my entire life and I've never met someone who was an adherent of Osteen or the like. I honestly don't think I've met anyone who has expressed support for them either.

To be honest, it doesn't come up. I think that's a sign of just how separate these guys are from mainstream Christianity

Nope.
It’s all about the money, and it’s not just the Televangelists.

Have you watched the Scientology series on A&E the last couple of years? The psychological parallels between Scientology and SJW Progressivism is astounding. It's crazy. It's like exactly the same behavior under a different banner.

Downvote now Progtards.

It's a phenomenon I've never understood. Most of them eventually get found out for being the exact scum they preach against.

Jim and Tammy Faye Baker, Robert Tilton, Jimmy Swaggart et al have been duping gullible people out of their hard earned money for ages. And they live in opulence while their contributors, usually older folks, struggle to make ends meet.

If there is a hell, there is a special place reserved for these scum of the Earth individuals.

Televangelists give Christianity a bad name, no doubt. It's sad. I'm not convinced they will have salvation on their day of judgement.

It's definitely a separate "branch," so to speak, but some of these guys have enormous followings and I think it does damage to the Christian faith

The real question is....How could anyone give any church money in any form?

You don't think the check I wrote to my local church, which supports 60+ missions/charitable projects is worthwhile? Is my annual check to the United Methodist Committee on Relief, which helps in disaster relief wother boots on the ground work, a head scratcher for you?

You don't have to believe, but how can you argue that all churches are rotten? Do the checks I write help to make the world a better place or not?

No doubt, I just don't think there is significant overlap.

Some may question that by noting (perhaps correctly) that plenty of church leaders who don't preach prosperity gospel still may be in it for the money. That could be true, but I still don't think they interact much.

In short, prosperity theology is entirely corrupt IMO. All of them. And that contingent rarely bleeds over into other evangelical movements.

But of course, that doesn't preclude corruption within those evangelical movements. It's just case-by-case instead of ingrained in the movement itself.

shite, they all use God to defend their jets. It's some of the most obvious BS I've ever seen in my life. People seemto buy it though, somehow.

Here's the worst example I've seen Ken Copeland and Jessie Duplatis Defend Their Private Jets

We have an entire industry of charlatans who get on TV, pretend to preach, and then beg you for money. They're hookers dancing for your dollar bills. Why do more Christians not condemn the behavior of hookers like Joel Osteen and Benny Hinn?

Sound like every church. At least these guys are upfront.

They are paying for “spiritual advice”. It helps some people. Why do you care if you not giving them money?

Better than giving your money to the casino or liquor store or whatever.

I never have defended them . Never will.
Hinn is a fraud.
Osteen is a money grubbing snake.
Joyce Mayer another money grubbing snake
Don't worry these wolves will reap what they sow.
Billy/Franklin Graham are among the few honest ones out there.
Please Don't think Christianity is anywhere remotely close to the lies these devils preach. It is not. Study Jesus' life to learn what Christianity aspires to.
And no never give a penny to them. It will just go to buy a new jet desperately "needed for the ministry" ,said need revealed in a dream by Jesus & one million angels on a super duper blood harvest moonlit night!
So say the soothsayers.
Full disclosure: I'm an evangelical (tho lapsed) Christian who acknowledges & condemns the frauds (westboro). But I will never apologize or be ashamed of my faith, weak as it is sometimes.

Most humans have an innate desire to be a part of something larger than themselves, and to be personally invested in that.

These televangelists attract the people that are unable to get that feeling anywhere else.

Think about all the churches of various religions that are located in whatever community you live. Pretty much all of them (not so much the Catholics) would LOVE for you to come check them out next Sunday, they have active outreach, etc. So if you are watching Hinn or the others on tv, you likely have some sort of reason you CAN'T get to a local church (old, sick, etc). Not coincidentally, these groups are also the most likely to send their money to these organizations.
