A Massachusetts woman says a family trip to see Santa ended last week when the jolly elf told her 10-year-old daughter not to approach with her service dog at the Pheasant Lane Mall in Nashua.

“He said he was allergic, and we would have to bring him back on pet day if we wanted him included,” Jill Twigg of Pepperell, Mass., said Monday. “I explained he was a trained service dog, but they were having none of it. I brought him off to the side, because they told me I had to keep him off the red carpet. It was horrible.”

According to the Americans with Disabilities Act, “allergies and fear of dogs are not valid reasons for denying access or refusing service to people using service animals.”

“It’s not like Romeo was going to sit in Santa’s lap,” Twigg said of the golden retriever. “He would have been standing by while Olivia sat with him. This is her first Christmas with Romeo, and she wanted to share a visit with Santa with him.”

Earlier this year, Romeo was delivered to his new family after Twigg launched an online campaign to raise the $25,000 needed to purchase an autism service dog. Twigg said Romeo accompanies Olivia everywhere and has been on prior trips to the Pheasant Lane Mall.

Personally I'm team Service Dog

That is a hell of a scam.

I mean, I don't doubt she has autism, but 25K for a golden that wants attention and would entertain a kid with the disease? Isn't that the description of every golden retriever before whatever training was needed?

So a 4yr old needs a service dog?
That's where we're at in America?

As a parent if something like this happened to my kid, I'd hold the dog and tell my kid to go talk to Santa.

I mean what kind of parent gets so butt hurt over this they take their kid home instead of talking to Santa?

The article says absolutely nothing about the dog helping the kid with anxiety in meeting new people, and it sounds like the kid wanted to talk to Santa. So I'm not falling for that either.

Who is having her 9 year old son and 10 year old daughter sit in mall Santa's lap, but can't possibly do it without the brand new dog they have lived without until a few months ago.

Sitting on Santa's lap at the mall is not a service.

Well, for kids anyway.

Pervs.

Team Santa.

The service dog epidemic is this country is fricking astounding. We live in the wealthiest, most technologically advanced, powerful country in the history of the world and we have millions of Americans that can't navigate the horrors of suburban life without an anxiety dog.

If you're born in the United States, you pretty much don't have real problems that 75% of the world has to deal with, like famine and lack of clean water and having your wife raped by a tribal lord. Move to fricking Pakistan or Africa or Cambodia for six months and see if you still need that service dog when you get back.

Team service dog.

Damn $25,000.

I'd want a service chimpanzee for that price.

I assume this Santa is paid for by a private company. If they have rules like "no animals of any kind" on certain days then you have to abide by that. It's not like they're denying a critical service or making a building that isn't up to code. You just don't get to see Santa until pet day. Team Santa.

Team Santa right here.

Your need to keep a pet at your side 24 hrs a day does not trump that person's medical condition/allergy to dogs.

fricking hate service dog people.

They have a specific day that aligns to her needs? How can anyone be anything but TeamSanta? They have a process for handling special requests, so the Mall did their job. They probably have a Santa available without allergies, which is a perfect solution. Owning a service dog still means there are special rules and they should probably get to knowing the rules in the places they frequent, even if sometimes people are lax on those rules.
