Between friends and family I'm in a circle of at least 14-15 teachers. None of them complain about pay or their job. Some are professors, some teach elementary, and some high school, most all of them in pretty rough school districts.

My thought is (knowing a ton of teachers as my wife is one) the person posting that is likely a shite teacher and probably doesn't deserve the pay they get now.
The only teachers I see posting crap like that on social media are the crap ones. I never see the good one complain about shite like that.
The problem with teaching is the good ones are underpaid and the crap ones are overpaid. It is a profession that doesn't allow the good ones to be paid better than the crap ones. Your pay is solely tied to how long you've been teaching.

So many get into the profession with high hopes that they'll do wondrous things for the kids but the reality is simply that it's like every other profession - some will suck, some will be really good, and most will be meh.
The education system is pretty screwy and a good teacher doesn't make anywhere near what is deserved and doesn't get much positive reinforcement at all. Crappy ones get paid just as much and get tenure just as fast.

Thousands of teachers in La and occasionally one post something like that on FB, yet I thought nobody on the OT had a FB. At fire dept prob 99% of us don't complain about pay or posts stupid shite like that on FB, once in a blue moon someone will, doesn't mean all firemen think like that, people on here are just too stupid to realize it so they throw an entire profession or 2 (teachers and nurses) under.

Yes.

Yes, but not nearly as much as they'd like you to think.

I believe administration should grow a set and provide good teachers the support they need to do their jobs. That means getting problems out of the classroom. That means standing up to lazy arse parents.
The problem is there are a ton of teachers that have no business being teachers. And with teachers unions, there's really no way to get rid of people that don't have any business in a classroom any more than kids that don't have any business in a classroom.

*Not in the summer time. You'd have to walk in my flip flops in that case. Or during my two weeks of vacation and week of sick leave on top of that. Oh and the other 5 weeks of holidays scattered throughout the year. Basically I only challenge you to walk in my shoes 65% of the year. Other than that I am off.
This picture must have had that part cut off or something.

I don't doubt the bureaucracy has gotten absurd, and that parents are less helpful than ever.
But for my entire lifetime teaching has been something that was relatively easy to get into from an educational effort/expense standpoint, and something that is considered honorable in part because it is altruistic in nature.

I teach and I'm cool with what I earn. FWIW, I did roof work in August and it sucked. I also hung glass in a radius in August which made roofing feel like a day in the shade. I chose to teach, I love what I do and teachers that complain piss me off. As for people putting down the profession, ignorance is bliss.

Think this is likely true, but a lot of the very good teachers I know are surrounded by this shite, and I think it wears off. For whatever reason, teachers can be very cliquish, more so than other professions. You won't catch me hanging out with my attorney "friends" on the weekend, but a lot of teachers I know tend to do this. Perhaps because they're predominantly young and female.
Anyway, point being that I think the shitty ones bitch so much to the decent ones that the decent ones sometimes pick up the cause. Not so obnoxiously, but I hear about it from the girls I'm friends with.

A predominantly female profession being really cliquish? That's just absurd!

for 5 days yes. Forever, no.

not sure about other states but the biggest complaint from teachers isn't the pay but it is that they have to come out of pocket to put stuff in the classroom, they pay for the paper that they use to make copies with and they pay for a lot of odd and ends stuff without reimbursement. Next time you go to a school supply drive, drop off a couple packs of copy paper for the teachers, they will love you for it.

My SO is a public school teacher. She has a lot of take home work and it can be hard at times but she loves it. As for the kids, A lot of those kids never had a chance. They work late hours to pay bills that their parents can't pay. No wonder They can't stay awake in school. They live in shelters because their parents are addicts and don't give a shite about them. My biggest thing about education is that if your parents don't give a shite, you won't give a shite. It's a vicious cycle that will never end.

Which is so sad because education is the way out of the cycle. You just have to have someone to encourage that in a child. One of the biggest things I'm thankful for of my childhood.....was that even though I grew up not having much money wise, my parents at least cared about my education(even though both of them only graduated HS) and encouraged and supported me.
I'm a product of public magnet/gifted schools and I was very fortunate to have had some amazing teachers. Teachers that left a lasting impact on me. I'm sure your SO tries to do the same for the children she teaches

They get paid $40+ a year to only work basically 8 months out of the year. And many of them can or do work a second job during the summer. Sounds like a pretty nice setup to me.

Would you be able to do their job?
yes, without question.
quote:
Are they underpaid?
Obviously not. But, if pay was raised significantly, and the hiring process was based on ability, many wouldn't be able to hold the jobs they hold now.

What (if anything) should change?
There is a ton of things that need to change with our education system. But, if all you did was pay teachers more and/or give more money for supplies, etc., nothing would be accomplished.
