I have done there job.

Are they underpaid?

Could they be compensated more? Certainly. However, compensation depends on degree and experience and they receive a decent compensation for 9 months of work, with substantial holidays and days off/half days.

What (if anything) should change?

Eviscerate the bureaucracy at the district and school level. Simplify hierarchy. This will free up millions for compensation and supplies.

Reinvigorate arts/music and physical education programs (especially the latter).

Tier the classes:

geniuses
normal
dumbasses

so everyone learns at their appropriate pace.

Not saying I couldn't teach, with proper training.. But it depends on what grade. 6th to 8th grade would be my area just because the importance of that age group.. I would not want to be a high school teacher... Too much bullshite and not enough parents that give a shite.... Underpaid is not even close... All teachers should be paid way more than they are.. I mean aren't kids the future???? Teachers are NOT babysitters... They are trained to open kids minds about what the world is around them. IMO Its Vital for kids to be educated more than just at school... Just watch the movie "Lean On Me" and tell me teachers are underpaid. That shite goes on everywhere.... I will say this for the 1,000th time... If the parents gave a shite kids would be better at school and LEARN more.... The government doesn't do enough IMO. Just look at Baton Rouge public schools.. They aren't just bad they are TERRIBLE... A majority of people that move other places are due to the shitty schools AND the danger that a lot of school have....

My own teachers used to tell us that when I was in high school. It's hilarious that in 17 years you can't find a teacher that was in it for the paycheck and perks, I just hope you don't teach a statistics class or something.

Or maybe I chose decent schools to work at and don't hang out with those types of people.

They are paid accordingly when you can consider how insane their retirement benefits are and that they only work about 65% of the year.

Exactly. It's not like they went to school to be an investment banker and woke up one day teaching the third grade.

Teaching is a very honorable profession, but it's also one that is semi-charitable.

Are there any professions that bitch as much as teachers and nurses?

Meh, it's just an OT thing. I've got many relatives who are teachers, and know many nurses also. None of them bitch on FB about it and very seldom bitch in person about it. Some may occasionally complain about a certain student or patient in person but that's rare.

Oh spare me this bullshite. The majority of teachers could give two shits. Not the I blame them, I couldn't imagine being a teacher in he south, especially south Louisiana where the parents of white trash and minorities don't give a frick about the well being of their child and have no idea where they are for nearly their entire lives. A public school teacher is fighting a losing battle and because of that, I think the majority don't give a frick anymore. Why should they? The students that are actually our future can teach themselves for the most part anyway, and they are typically the ones that will pay attention and try to absorb the lesson for the day. I think "no child left behind" is a abomination and should be eliminated. I have a mother that is very decorated teacher/administrator and a brother that is a senior high school teacher and I feel for both of them and as they are pretty much fed up. They give a frick, and they are the minority amongst their peers.

My wife just retired after 29 years. I pushed her to retire earlier than would max out her retirement benefits just because of the stress that job created.

When I was a kid, my parents told me it was a requirement that I obey my teachers or I would be in trouble.
This isn't true anymore. Parents hover over kids and they can do no wrong, and if a teacher doesn't share that view, they are the enemy and someone to loathe.

A little dramatic, but you get my point. Teachers really have their hands tied behind their back by administrators and parents. Administrators are scared of parents, and it filters down to the teachers.
Children don't respect, and aren't taught respect by their parents anymore.

It's by far a more difficult job than when I was a kid.

If we ever start paying teachers significantly more, there is going to be so much bitching from them about how we don't treat them like self-sacrificing heroes anymore.

The three "jobs" complained about most on facebook are:

Teachers
Nurses
Stay at home mom

What is the common denominator here?

Teachers are overpaid considering they are for the most part just babysitters. I mean the kids aren't learning anything.

I could see them bitching about pay if they were putting out a quality product but we all know that isn't the case.

We chose our path but when many of us started out we had more say so about what happened in our classrooms and way fewer standardized tests.

They all complain that they don't get paid shite yet completely ignore the pension plans and healthcare benefits that anyone else would kill for. Those poor babies could work 20 years and retire for 40.

Considering most teachers never complain about pay to begin with I seriously doubt that.

Always funny to me when nurses complain. Some of the retards I've met that passed nursing school make me hesitate to use that hospital.

I mean I'm talking about girls who are incapable of basic algebra.. unable to spell at an appropriate level.. and a complete lack of critical thinking ability.

It's scary
