Just not so important they should get 6 figures
Paying 6 figures to teachers makes more sense than paying 10 figures to athletes, but if we paid them that the people teaching now wouldn't get the jobs. You'd have smart people taking those jobs left and right.
A girl I went out with for 2.5 years took 7 years to graduate, and one letter grade lower on one of her finals would have meant she lacked the GPA to get her degree. And this was at fricking Southeastern. That's what's teaching your children. And she was a 25 yr. old virgin.

Depending on the state, a given teacher may be able to just walk into a school and get a class or they may have to jump through all sorts of crazy qualification hoops (substitutes are a completely different story).
From all the teachers I know the problem isn't so much the pay as it is the lack of funding for supplies (many end up spending their own money on things like pens, markers, decorations, etc) and the complete lack of support by local administrations (principals and school boards) in dealing with shitty kids coming from shitty families living in shitty communities that believe SSI is their God-given right.

Faggie, you know not what you speak of. STFU and put your male cheerleader outfit back on and go play with your puff buddies.

My wife is a teacher, and you couldn't pay me enough to deal with today's kids.
With that said, there is plenty of money for education, but it is being spent on stuff that isn't needed. Just in her county, there are at least two ESL teachers at every school. With close to 30 schools, that's well over 2.5 million dollars going toward the children of mostly illegals.
The central office employs over 150 people, most of whom never see the inside of a school. All they do is go to meetings and conferences. My wife occasionally gets to go to these conferences, and she could learn just as much doing teleconferences for a lot less money.
Don't even get started on administrator salaries. Our superintendent makes just under $200K, and there are many more making over 6-figures.
I could go on, but my point is the school administrators could do some things to find more money for teachers and classrooms. Sadly they won't.

Here is why they are paid so little:
Every CPA in my office could do there job. We may hate it, but we could walk right in and do it.
If a group of teachers walked in our office tomorrow and tried to complete our work for a week, they would have 0.0% chance.
The same goes for doctors, engineers, lawyers etc
It may sound harsh but being a teacher is actually easy. It may be a pain in the arse and miserable, but it is easy and doesnt require an innate skillset. That is what drives the low pay.
I will get downvoted and mean faces at me, but the truth needs to be spoken

I am a teacher and I don't think I am underpaid. I just don't get that argument. We are essentially working 9 months a year. The pay isn't so horrible for having 3 months off.
However, the other issues are there. Being held 100% accountable for test scores when that just isn't how it works. Being expected to be so creative with lessons but not being given any funds to purchase needed items for the classroom. We certainly don't make enough to buy all our supplies. But this is true for any job, no job is perfect.

No one forced people to be a teacher. They had to know what you are getting into before they picked the path.
Yes they are important but quit bitching about how terrible it is or go find something else to do.

I don't know a single teacher who took the job because "it's an easy job, hours are good, and all the time off". This is my 17th year of teaching and 5th school and I have never met one teacher who felt that way. I'm not saying they aren't out there but they are few and far between.

Agree, and I'm sure this point has been made, too -- when I am making decent money at my soul-crushing job, there are days I would kill for their time off.

Don't we a higher cost per child ratio than any other country in the world? Aren't we also middle of the pack in terms of testing and results? About time we take a look at those teachers and parents perhaps.

Yes.
No.
Not much, if anything.

Teachers that post stuff like this are usually whiny idiots, but all legislators are whiny idiots so it cancels out.

I disagree, I lack the patience to actually teach kids like that. I enjoyed teaching (TA not professor) college level students, but still got pretty frustrated in some of the entry / remedial classes plus I don't really like kids.
The point is we should be paying our teachers more and we would get better teachers who you wouldn't be able to make the same comments about. We get what we pay for and our culture severely and surprisingly undervalues education by not paying enough and not really celebrating educational achievement in the same way we do athletic and elsewhere.

My own teachers used to tell us that when I was in high school. It's hilarious that in 17 years you can't find a teacher that was in it for the paycheck and perks, I just hope you don't teach a statistics class or something.

You don't have to be very skilled to be public school teacher however. I could easily walk 5 days in their shoes, it would just be annoying as hell.

The people that put guns to their heads to become teachers are the ones that need to be held accountable. That is unacceptable.

Lets see some figures behind that please?
Per the United Nations Education agency (UNESCO) America is around 6th highest paid. Ironically, the countries that beat our arse educationally tend to be lower down on the list.
