Discipline is an overriding concern. Bad behavior on the part of students should result in a "bad reward" for those students, detention, boot camp programs, etc.

If you annualize their salary they are making mid to high 50s. That ain't bad. Their actual salary reflects the time they get off for summer where they can get a job to supplement their income, if they so choose. Don't want a minimum wage job over the summer? Learn a computer language during your spare time one summer and do some side work in coding or web design. That graphics makes it sound like they live in poverty.

Lots of professions could bitch. Go talk to guys in finance or accounting. Those poor bastards are salary working well over a 50 week average sometimes. Hell, instead of 3 months off for the summer, any one in tax ramps up to at least 60 hours per month for at least three months out of the year. Their salary doesn't really reflect that and there is no overtime pay.

I would love to accept that challenge at any time during the summer.

I wouldn't want their job even if it paid 100K/yr. Not because I think it's a difficult career, it just doesn't fit my personality. I don't have the patience for kids.

Avg pay in BR is 48k. That is for 36 weeks a year. If that salary was applied to a 52 week job you would be looking at a 70k salary. I understand that in smaller communities that number is dwarfed but the 52 week salary far exceeds that of most police and firefighters, I would much rather walk in the teachers shoes than theirs for 5 days.

ETA: Son of a teacher and married to one, so I fully understand other issues and the gap between classroom fees allotted and needed.

How many sex scandals would you have if politicians were teachers for 5 days?

It's a tough job. In addition to having to deal with with unruly kids and their even more unruly parents for approximately 8 months, they also have to be concerned with shoulder injuries sustained while constantly reaching over to pat themselves on the back.

If the pay was higher, many current teachers would never have gotten their jobs. They would be working some other lower paying job with less competition.

I don't want legislators doing my job for five days because unlike teaching, it's a job that actually requires being done well.

My wife is a teacher and she says the federal government provides approximately $10,000 for each student. They should have more than enough material, you almost can't even move around in most classes there is so much "material".

Exactly. Most, but not all, I know took the job because it was easy, hours good and all the time off. They really get paid well around here, especially compared to other industries. Two teachers living together live a solid middle to upper middle class existence. Some of the nicer homes in town are owned by teachers. I see nice new cars throughout the teachers parking lot. And considering my MIL and SIL are teachers, I know what they make and it's more than they earn.
