quote:

According to the police report, DJ punched his special education teacher at Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School in the face after she took an iPad away from him. She says, he hit her hard enough to bruise her nose.

McKay says the teacher triggered DJ by taking that iPad away from him. McKay says an iPad is a great source of comfort for her son. She also says the teacher yelled at DJ and 'snatched' the iPad out of his hands, which is not described in the police report.

quote:

McKay is not defending her son's actions.

"When he is in an environment that's really loud he starts wailing hands and he has hit in the past. We've talked about it's not okay to hit people and we need to come up with ways to better communicate with each other because hitting is not okay. He does understand that after the fact but he doesn't understand that in that situation," said McKay.

However, McKay does think his teacher should've known how to better de-escalate the situation.

My wife is a special ed teacher. It’s actually a requirement in her school that incidents like above be reported. They’re all on video now in the classrooms so everything has to be by the book. This way the teacher’s arse is covered if the parents raise hell.

“Martin Luther King, Jr. Elementary School.”

Reported through the school or through the police?

Yep. It's a common tactic by schools when a teacher wants that kid out of her classroom or a principle wants a kid out of the school. Special ed kids are protected by federal law, so there isn't much that can be done when a kid is too much. Except call the police when they act out. It's supposed to be reserved for extreme cases of fear of severe bodily injury or death. But it's becoming more and more common. A product of trying to incorporate every kid in a typical classroom environment in which they don't all belong.

Probably a liability issue.

Scruffy has no issue with this. It isn’t as if they will send the kid to prison.

This is the cause and effect of over-legislation and the inability of the teachers and staff to discipline the children in a classroom setting. Laws.

Used to be that "special" children went to "special" schools.

Used to be that ill-behaved were disciplined by teachers and headmasters.

A baton Rouge teacher slammed an autistic 6 year old's head into a brick wall after claiming the kid hit him.

Which reaction do you think was worse?

No idea if it was an overreaction.

It really depends on the child's overall level of functioning. If he is below "rain man" level of verbal abilities - this was an overreaction by the teacher.

However, if this kids is just a big brat with a "autism spectrum" diagnosis that serves to cover up his horrible attitude and defiance - it was totally correct on her part to file charges.

Filing charges on an 8 year old is almost always a ridiculous reaction by an adult. But, if schools could expel kids or discipline them like they used to be able to, there would be more reasonable responses.

I love how these parents think that just because their kids can paint or draw they are soooooo special.

You’re no Van Gogh kid. You don’t get to cut your ear off and hit people with impunity.

This. They have to file an incident report with the school for everything now. It's because so many times the tea her calls the parents in to talk and the parents won't believe there kid did any wrong, then they throw the folder of write-ups at them.
My wife says for some reason (and she doesn't know much about religion or politics) the Jehovah's witness kids are the worst. (pre-k and K) they hit, kick scream and punch and basically don't listen to authority that isn't religious or parental.

As shitty as today’s litigation environment is, the teacher probably just wanted documentation.

Likely a case where administration wasn't helping the teacher with the child, so teacher decided to escalate things. I'm perfectly okay with this. You know if the teacher sneezed on a kid, Kiran Chawla would be blasting it on the (insert time news comes on) o'clock news that the teacher infected the little angel with airborne AIDS. Protect yourself if no one else will. Also, there's a difference between filing charges and making a report. Bet this curbs the kid's "autistic" behavior.

A police report with each incident?

Wow, that's nuts.

Am I the o lt one that thinks the iPad parents negatively contribute to “autistic” kids. Parents don’t parent, they just give them an iPad and left them go.

I use quotes bc I believe there is a gross over diagnosis of this, similar to ADHD in the 90s/ early 00s.

This is bullshite. If you, as a special ed teacher, cannot handle a student that has special needs, find another job.
