What kind of fricking imbecile thinks this? NO teacher should have to put up with physical assault.

I taught at a school on MLK blvd in New Orleans. We had FOUR teachers out on assault leave. One had her arm crushed in a door by students, another was pushed down concrete steps. This was an elementary school.

Well, the New Orleans school board in its infinite wisdom sent someone to talk to the teachers about dealing with this alarming and dangerous situation.

Here is what we were told to do if a student attacks. We were to put our hands in the air and under no circumstances were we to touch the child, even to defend ourselves or to push the child away.

We were to stand there with our hands in the air so that the school board would not get sued by a lil chocolate snowflake's sue-happy mama.

They assured us that the school board lawyer would have us arrested and prosecuted if we so much as dared to touch a child.

I'm sure it was that simple. "No thank you...I'd rather not go to PE today. But thank you."

What is the teacher supposed to do? He hit her hard enough to bruise her nose. What happens next time when another kid takes his iPad and he hits the kid hard enough to break that kids nose? What if that were your kid whose nose he broke? What if that was your wife teaching the class and she came home bruised all the time. How long would you allow that to happen? The point is that there are a lot of what if's and the best protection against what if's is documentation.

I agree that if the teacher decides or agrees to teach special education then she assumes some risk of doing so but where do you draw the line. The school has to protect the teachers and the other students.

Uh... Yeh.. He sat in his desk and wanted to keep reading his book. Teacher tried to force him out. He refused. Principle came and tried to pull him out. He pushed back. Cops came, handcuffed him, and drug him out.

But hey. Livingston parish is much better prepared and equipped to deal with autistic kids now. Thanks to us.

Why on earth would anyone want to be a teacher or police officer in today’s world? Underpaid and shite upon by many, they’re charged with the most important aspects of society. Public safety and education should get more respect, and pay, than it does. It’s a damn shame.

The problem is that probably lots of the teachers out there are overpaid. The good ones are severely underpaid.

To get better ones we definitely need to pay more. The problem is most of them don't deserve that pay bump. Add the fact that there is virtually zero accountability in the field (for a variety of reasons some in control and some out of control of teachers) and the fact that teachers unions just think pay should be set on years experience...all this results in the product we have right now.

I'd love to see teachers get paid for performance. My wife would probably make more money.

That was the beginning of the end. Then my vehicle was had 3 separate incidents where my vehicle windows were smashed by a rocks thrown by kids from the playground.

The principal refused to do anything, even though we knew who did it. (Schools refused to suspend students because it lowered their state score. So our school had a 0.0% suspension rate).

I was told it was my fault and I needed to find a better place to park (there were no good places. It was f*cking mlk blvd by the old BW Cooper and some other project).

So a week later i went to the principal and thanked him for his wise words. I told I had indeed found a much better place to park - at a local Catholic school where i had just accepted a job, effective immediately.

I packed my sht and left, lol.

I use quotes bc I believe there is a gross over diagnosis of this, similar to ADHD in the 90s/ early 00s.

Bc they are starting to lump autism in with aspergers. Yeah both are “on the spectrum” but one is very limited in functional tasks and one just is significantly better at learning than interacting with peers.

The article backs this up:

McKay told News 13 DJ is also no longer allowed at MLK's after school program. A report shows, during the program DJ hit another teacher and tried to hit another student

My wife is a Special Ed Coordinator with her school district. She has been punched, pushed, and poked at by many of her students. I have repeatedly asked her to get back in a normal classroom but she loves her job because she feels she is making a difference in the lives of a segment of the population that is generally ignored. It's her calling I guess and some of our closest friends are parents of her students. I think for the most part all Special Ed teachers are like this and if they aren't, they do need to find another job.

Every job should be pay for performance. Government-backed unions have destroyed that idea, however. Especially in the public sector market.

The teacher did the right thing and got ahead of the parent. The kid goes home and says what happened then they're filing a report against the teacher. Now the teacher can control the narrative of what actually happened

Teachers get a performance check every year, it isn't much but it does mean more pay. Also if your student scores are low and your observations suck you can be terminated or you will have to go through training again. So a teacher scoring a 1 or a 2 yearly will be removed and retrained.
