Even if numbers improve and lifestyle changes are made. Is it pretty much the case that once you're on it you're on it forever (unless, of course, you just stop on your own against advice from the doctor).

For cholesterol meds yeah probably

But even with normal cholesterol statins have shown to decrease risk of adverse events

I know quite a few people that have gotten off BP meds after lifestyle improvement

I've been advised that once you start the cholesterol meds, you don't stop.

I was on bp meds until about 3 months ago. Started a clean diet and exercising daily. No more high blood pressure.

As my doctor told me, since my cholesterol has dramatically been reduced, they medicine prevents plaque from building so for the $5 or so a month why stop? Look at it as an insurance policy.

I have read articles speculating that statins may impact dementia--they work so well the cholesterol protective sheaths on nerves are impacted.

once ur numbers are down, f the doctor.

Some doctors are legalized pill pushers. Putting everyone on drugs, rather than treat shite.

"So your arm is broke and bone looks off centered, take this for 2 weeks and make an appointment when pills are gone." LOL

I quit taking Lipitor on my own and nothing bad happened.

That stuff was killing my knees and legs.

I have two fears with statins. 1. The joint and muscle pains that are associated with it and 2. That you have to be on it the rest of your life. I am trying go cut my cholesterol by half by the end of the summer and hopefully get a different diagnosis from my doc. I have type 2 diabetes and high choelsteral so I am trying desperately can to fix this. And no I am not a fatty...just genetics

Sorry, Nature Boy, I was on both but I'm no longer on either. Food and lifestyle changes do work.

I'm supposed to take a statin daily but I just can't. I take it a couple times a week. If I take it on consecutive days my whole body starts hurting.

If a statin consistently gives you pain in the legs or knees you need to stop taking it and inform your doctor. There are alternatives other than statins. If you are hurting chances are your kidneys are also being damaged. And it gets really bad if your kidneys are involved.

Statins are brutal on your liver.

Also, under new risk calculator guidelines that came out this past year, statins aren't necessarily needed for a lot of borderline high cholesterol folks.
