re: T or F: Once you're on a cholesterol or BP med you're on it for life

I take BP meds (not a fatty - 35 inch waist) and I doubt I'll ever get off of them. All of the males in my family have it starting at about age 30. I've tried getting off of them but it seems like no amount of exercise, diet or cutting out the booze has any effect on mine. I'm 6'3" and got down to 185 and still had high BP. Guess I'd rather pay $20 per month than have a stroke. Luckily I don't have any side effects.

What kind of side effects, if any, does the cholesterol medication have?

Watch the Netflix documentary "What the Health". It will change your mind on what medications are needed "forever". Requires a major lifestyle change but if you want to do it, it can be done.

My grandfather (greatest generation) was put on BP meds when he was in his late 50s. He didn't like taking "drugs" so he started long distance jogging. He was off the mesds within a year, a few years later he qualified for the Boston Marathon at the age of 65. But that generation had a different mindset, said "if the Japs couldn't kill him no way was he letting high blood pressure"

False to both of them. Some doctors are so quick to put you on there that it may be iffy if you actually need them.
Lifestyle moderations do help some people.....I'm not talking about marathon training either.....just modifications.....it brought my numbers down over the years.

Even if numbers improve and lifestyle changes are made. Is it pretty much the case that once you're on it you're on it forever (unless, of course, you just stop on your own against advice from the doctor).
depends on how long you have been taking them, after a while your body adjusts and stops regulating things without the meds.
you cant just stop taking them.
I was conned many years ago into taking BP meds when im just borderline at the edge of needing them, now if I don't take them my pressure goes crazy and I feel ill.
if I knew how to, I would ween myself off of them, but how do you know what portion size of a pill to take and how do you cut it up accurately to even try? you body reacts to it like a highly addictive drug with withdrawl symptoms and physical effects.
I was 1 pressure point below what is considered as high and I stayed that way for 20 years with no issues but due to needing surgery they wouldn't do it unless I was on meds to bring my pressure to below minimum levels for safety. I think it was all BS but what can you do
bottom line is never start them if you are just a borderline case, its pretty much a life sentence once you do

I have RA, which increases my risk for coronary disease, plus my good cholesterol was pretty low (genetic - everyone in my family has low good, including an uncle who is a tennis freak and at about 5% body fat).
Switched to Crestor and haven't had any problems.
I take CoQu10, too, which is suppose to replace some enzyme that the statins destroy and is what causes the cramps and muscle pains, supposedly, but it didn't stop the Lipitor.

I was on a statin in my mid-30s. I had high good (HDL) and the total / triglycerides was a little high.
I got healthy. Exercise regularly, and haven't taken any cholesterol meds for 7+ years.
My HDL is high which is good, but now my LDL and tri's are low. The total is hovering at 200.
You can get off them. It all depends.
