How old are you? I remember eating King sized Snickers bars just trying to gain weight, then I hit 40. If I looked at a piece of cake, I gained weight.

I weigh less now than I did at 40.
just don’t eat garbage. You don’t really even have to exercise just stay active, drink water and don’t eat processed food

How many calories is that? Sounds really low.

I don’t know, but it is a lot of mass.

I don't get these arguments.

You can make the right lifestyle changes but temptation always lurks. Splurge for a little while and pounds pack back on as well.

I never understand why this fact is seen as a dunk against GLP 1s?? "The drug stops working after you take it" yeah no shite. You know what else stops working if you stop doing it? Diet and exercise.

I agree it’s a dumb dunk.

But I would hope (unrealistically) that most people would treat it as a kickstart. A leg up. To help create lifelong habits and eventually not need it.

I’m SHOCKED that isn’t the case.

Our food system is jacked despite the much-improved RFKJ food pyramid.

I think portion sizes are our main problem

My son had some college friends from the Netherlands. They were blown away by restaurant portion sizes. They were repulsed by it. They said no wonder everyone is fat around here.

Get to those daily calorie limits, if not over it, in 1 meal

I don't think it's a "dunk" per se. The drugs clearly work. I think it's more of an indication that people aren't using them as a kickstart, as you said. Lots of people thought that it could be like training wheels where you learn good habits and get to a weight where you're eating clean and exercising. I think a lot more people are using it as a muzzle where they eat less of their nachos or fried chicken instead of making good choices

it's always been a known thing that the only thing that is a long term solution is change in lifestyle

Actually, regardless of the method of weight loss (including "lifestyle changes") over 80% of people gain a significant amount of the weight back within five years. The majority gain all of it back and a significant percentage gain all of it plus some.

Once the leptin/ghrelin/serotonin mechanism gets messed up, it's just really, really difficult to get it to re-set to a new baseline.

It can happen with some people. Most people it just doesn't.

That may be true for exercise, but the primary mechanisms of why GLP-1 drugs work is acting as an appetite suppressant, slowing the stomach emptying (so you stay full longer) and as a serotonin modulator.

So they do eat less. That's the point.

The point is, metabolism drops dramatically after 30. Very easy to gain weight, very hard to lose it. You lose muscle mass, testosterone drops, and the habit you built as a young man become a massive burden.

Well here;s a newsflash….diets stop working too when you get off of them. I know several people who lost substantial weight by dieting, but every one of them gained it all back when they quit dieting. There seems to be no middle ground….either you’re starving yourself (quite literally) or gaining weight.

Genetics are a bitch.

Yep, that's why on the rare occasion my wife and I go to a restaurant we'll share an appetizer and an entre. All that food, just sad.

Oh, and we sit on the same side of a booth (OT hates this).
