Wondering what went on behind the scenes to prompt this.

I would say it's probably not so much what's behind the scenes but more what is out in the open. I wouldn't want to have to answer for that sheriff either.

The tax is going to pass, as is the mosquito vote.

If it doesn't you might as well merge St. Tammany into Orleans after you take 140 cops off the street.

More exceptional journalism

That is a proper sentence. If you remove the and and make it two sentences you can see they both make perfect sense

Records show Couvillion was taken to a hospital.

Records state he suffered a concussion and displaced front teeth

Not saying Smith should have attacked Bobby Couvillion, but if you familiar with him, you understand the motivation. He is a world class butthole who pisses off just about everybody he meets, even priests.

Wrong. The sheriff would appoint a successor if he resigns. Could be whomever he chooses regardless of rank and status if he picks someone within the office. Depending on the length of the remainder of the current term, a special election would take place if necessary.

State statutes indicates the governing authority of the parish picks the successor. There is precedence where a sheriff appointed a successor prior to his death, Terrebonne Parish in 1986.

Awfully cavalier of you considering recent tax elections and public happenings.

St. Tammany isn't safe because the sheriff can afford armored response vehicles.

In a public statement, Sheriff Smith apologized for his actions but claimed he "ignored hundreds of personal attacks directed at me by an individual who hides behind a computer screen" over the past decade.
