AP is reporting maximum sustained winds have increased to 155 MPH. This thing will be a category five on landfall.

It’s unreal how the storms recently have just blown the frick up before landfall.

NE quad flight-level winds coming down a smidge too, just under 140kts vs 145kts+ earlier.

Make no mistake - Ida remains an extremely dangerous storm that will bring catastrophic impacts - but it doesn't seem to have succeeded in reaching Category Five status. LINK

Clear something up for me. Are the winds they talk about suface winds or flight level winds?

Surface winds are measured 10m off the ground.

The one the news stations have been noting this morning in Mississippi canyon 311 is 90m up I think on that old Apache platform.

The graph at the top right measures winds in knots at different elevations, so at 262 meters it is 144 knots, and at 0 meters (surface) it's 118 knots or 135 mph. Typically the higher winds are at higher elevations but can mix down if the storm strengthens/is strengthening.

Eta: as mentioned above surface winds are not exactly at 0 meters elevation

They talk about both, but surface winds are what the NHC provides on updates..

Link: NHC 8:00 am update

It appears that Recon has found stronger winds, but the NHC hasn’t reported those yet.

That's what I was wondering. So if Ida is rated at 150 mph, that may be a few thousand feet above the ground? TBH what's happening at the surface is a lot more relevant.

Has there been a mass exodus this morning after people saw what this storm has become?

Unfortunately, NO. I stayed up all night (anxiety) and watched the interstate traffic cameras.

I know I am a broken record but a HUGE MISS by our Government Officials not to send an emergency mobile text message alert out at 3AM to announce the storm to Category 4 and give people a window to still evacuate that went to bed thinking it was a Category 2.

Broken Record but if some estranged father would have taken their teenage daughter across state lines we would have had three Amber Alert texts at 4am about the car color and license plate number.
