Lol no you won't. Just like I won't leave if it doesn't pass. Like all the celebrities saying they would leave the country if Trump got elected and surprise surprise they are still here. Despite their feelings to him, they sure do enjoy all the benefits of the current economy. You won't be any different.

New young families will not move to BR and current ones will probably look towards Central and Zachary and other areas for better schools and less crime. It's continuing the downhill spiral in Baton Rouge that is not catering to a growing city between the schools and lack of tax incentives for businesses to come here.

Once you realize that one side is lying their arse off, this is an easy decision.

I don’t thunk there will be another push. It’s now or never. If it fails this time you’ll just see a mass exodus.

People don’t just all of the sudden pull up stakes en masse because they didn’t get their way. Simple household economics will dictate that.

If St George does not pass the people should get as involved in City politics as they have regarding this issue. Pick a good candidate from their area and support him/her solidly and get your own person in the mayors office.

Then pick like minded candidates for city council in all districts and support their candidacy.

Complaining about the current mayor doesn’t do a lot of good. She got elected because the St George people don’t vote and the north Baton Rouge people do. You want to change it actually get off the couch and the OT and do something about it.

And when Eddie Rispone doesn’t make the runoff he can be your candidate.

I believe that it has to pass all three levels. State legislature, statewide, and parish-wide.
This is where what I brought up earlier comes into play.

If the leaders in Baton Rouge would let St. George do its thing, I think things would go pretty well. I just don't see that happening. I have a feeling that BR leaders are going to do everything in their power to spite St. George. They already started by getting the transition bill shot down. There will lawsuits out the arse to tie this up in court for years. I wouldn't be surprised if the school district passed at the legislative and State level, but the BR leaders make sure it tanks at the parish level.

It'll be gradual and very slow if anything. And I agree, I think Rispone will run for Mayor of St George if he loses the Governor race.

No, just no. I can go find the last few large elections (mayor, governor and president) if you'd like. Since I did it once before, NBR had some districts with 18% turnout others with under 30 while ALL of the St George area had in the 70s.

Then seems like there are a bunch of closet St George folks that voted for Sharon Weston Broome.

In my lifetime, or that I can remember we have had Woody Dumas, Pat Screen, Tom Ed McHugh, Bobby Simpson, Kip Holden and Sharon Weston Broome.

With the exception of Pat Screen who lived in Tara all were from the north side of the parish.

Why? Because they have historically voted together while the rest of the parish doesn’t vote as a block nor do they actually vote en masse.

Maybe that will change with this election. Time will tell.

They win because they do have guaranteed votes from NBR that vote purely based on a "D" next to their name or the color of the candidates skin. Mix that with folks like Helmet and Kibbles and you get SWB.

Agree with that.

Disagree with this because on a good day I can get to downtown in 30 minutes so being involved is quite difficult. Way different if city hall is ten minutes away. Our area is underrepresented on the metro council so involved or not, the majority of the council does what they want to do. I mean the NAACP said not too long ago that the whole council should be black because that represents Baton Rouge better. Pretty hard to have any productive conversations with that mindset.

The real thing that needs to happen is that the consolidated city parish government needs to go. The way it is currently is a huge conflict of interest despite how fair they claim they are. I'd be willing to wager that more people would be okay with no St. George if the parish government was overhauled, but the latter doesn't seem like it would happen any time soon.

If St. George somehow does not come to fruition, it's Ascension here I come ASAP. Really the only reason I haven't left already is the hope that there may be a St. George with new school district that is up to par with Zachary, Ascension, Central etc.

Do you have any facts to support this claim? What was turnout in the SG area compared to the parish-wide and statewide turnout in the same election?

This should be an object lesson of why giving someone a seemingly impossible task to do is a REALLY bad idea.

She never thought they could form a city so she used that as a club to get the district out of the legislature’s business.

Except now her own actions are making that city happen and are going to directly affect her future as mayor-President. Oops.

Voter turnout as a whole was pretty bad. Just looking at a few precincts from the last governors election though:

In NBR, 1-057 had 36.6% turnout, 3-008A had 39.7%, 3-008B 36.7%, 1-002A 20.8% ( ), 1-002B 22.5%

In St. George, 3-040A 42.8%, 3-040B 41.7%, 3-036A 48.5%, 3-036B 48.8%, 3-013A 42.7% and 3-013B 42.9%

Parish as a whole had a 39.1% turnout. Those were just the precincts I happened to click on. I would imagine there are some outliers for both.

ETA: LINK In case anyone would like to look for themselves.

Why do you think people who have not moved away so far will suddenly decide they have to get out?

It won't happen overnight, but it will happen. I know plenty of people who have been fed up with the shitty schools, the traffic, and the crime for a long time, but were holding out hope for some sort of positive change. Then along comes SWB and they got change, but not the kind they were hoping for. Since the Alton Sterling fiasco, things have gotten progressively worse and Broome has only exacerbated the problem.
