the delusion here is wild.
250k for a dual income house is unattainable for 90% of the population.

In a world of $1,000 car payments and half million dollar starter homes, $250k doesn’t stretch far.

Premise, premise, premise
If you fit your kids in where you can around a life vision of country clubs, luxury cars, fancy restaurants, 5-star vacations, then I think you are precisely right. I would worry that $250k is borderline having to eat at Chilis and use 87 octane gas only. Hang in there.

Only way that I could see how a family would make it on $100k is if you lived in a relatively small/cheap home, don’t go on more than one vacation per year and rarely go out on dates. Between sitters and dinner I typically spend $200 on a weekend night and that’s not going anywhere fancy. I really think you’d need a salary of $250k to be comfortable on a single income
jesus you people must be terrible with money

sure, 250k is a crazy number, but can't we admit that 100k is not much for a family in 2023?

Sure. You are not ballin at $100k with multiple kids.
But you can certainly be “comfortable” on that. It takes some planning and patience, but it’s certainly doable.

My wife has 2 sisters, a brother, and her parents within 5 miles of us. We never pay for a sitter for date nights. And we typically spend less than $100 on a date. We go out once every 2-3 weeks.
Problem is so many people decide to leave their hometowns, and live amongst strangers in the big city.
I grew up in a big city with limited family. So glad we decided to move to my wife’s hometown.

In a major city, you can’t get ahead on $100k for a family of 4.

Nah, single person making $100k can save a lot in a many cities. Rent isn’t that crazy, neither are 1/2 bedroom condos if you don’t go crazy buying furnishings and know how to cook.
It is the kids that burn through capital and generate opex liabilities. I bet we have spent an average of $30,000 per kid, per year, over the last 7 years.

What?!? If you don’t spend money on useless crap and eat out every day, 100k is more than enough. Downsize your home, move to a cheaper area. If you wfh move to the country.

Well, since it happened in my house and I have worked from it since 2008, I’ve known exactly what is going on.
Fair point. Still can’t understand why if you have the means to pay a live in nanny why your wife isn’t home. But hey, if making money takes precedence over raising your own kids, who am I to criticize?

How could you possibly have anything for savings/retirement at $100k? I think max 401k per year is about $22k, leaving you ~$58k after taxes. If you have two kids with a 529 account that’s $8800 per year after tax. That leaves you with $4,000 per month to pay for groceries, health insurance, daycare/school, housing and all other bills. If you want to go to gulf Shores over the summer you’ll spend $4k on 4 people easy. Good luck if you need to replace a roof or AC

4K is plenty for us. We have a $1200 mortgage, no car notes, bills can sometimes get us in the dead of winter and summer. Other than that, we make it through just fine. We don’t have to pay for childcare.
We have credit cards to pay for big ticket stuff if absolute necessity, but we also have a decent amount of savings.
Got family land I plan on retiring to, between now and then we’ll build us a little cabin when the kid gets older and can help out.
