Dallas housing rates have climbed drastically. Single family housing that was under $200/sq ft in 2016 is now selling for $350-400/sq ft in my neighborhood, but you can rent a 1 bedroom apartment that is nice, flush with amenities, for under $1,500 in the same area. If you’re willing to live without a pool and gym, you can rent older housing stock in good neighborhoods for $1k range. Tons of guest house setups, tri and quad plex rentals of older homes that have been chopped up into multi family homes. Affordable options exist outside of living deep in a ghetto with bars on the windows.

You can’t rent a decent place in BR for $1500 either

Apparently in the big cities of Texas you can

Most of rural LA, which is most of LA. But you aren't living in a decently sized city here with that income without sacrificing your child's education (barring some sort of charter school situation that I'm not aware of). I wouldn't be comfortable in that situation, but comfort is definitely subjective.

Maybe I'm looking in the wrong place but there are literally hundreds of apartments in and around downtown, uptown, deep ellum and the arts district on apartments.com for around 1500/month for a 1 bedroom.

I’m not saying you are wrong about Dallas -I have no idea

The people I know in the Dallas area do not live in Dallas proper - much like Houston - I have family all over Texas but none live in the cities

I knew an elderly couple that lived in San Antonio but they were killed by some nutjob(this was years ago)

Place sits in a really nice neighborhood where a newer house runs $1.5M+ right off lower Greenville adjacent to Lakewood. 1bedroom for $1,100. Older building, but remodeled, has a pool, and walkable to dining and nightlife. Cheap living.

You’re not going to live in a high rise cheaply, but you can get a decent place. Move out to the sticks and options abound.

Ok where? Plus, do the jobs in BR really pay well enough to get ahead while renting?

Maybe for single people, not for families that try to put their children first. Most single people I know have roommates because of the costs.

Wife and myself both work from home. Always have. She has her office and I have mine. Has worked out well.

BR and Shreveport both have really good magnet programs

not sure about other cities

but private school in most of the mid sized cities (like Alexandria) is not that expensive

Yeah. The idea that a single person can't get ahead on $100k in Dallas or Houston is absurd.
I thought this thread was about single income families not single people?

they pay a lot of money to make those places look nice for photos but 9/10 are roach infested shitholes. low ceilings and 600 sq ft is a hard pass as well

RENTER BEWARE!!!
The management will not fix anything here. The front door to the complex has been broken for over a month now and they will ignore your requests for pest control. The roach issue is so bad that you cant even cook here. They have removed recycling and have cut trash pickup in half to once every two weeks. Not to mention they only use one dumpster for the entire complex. This place is disgusting and they are even raising the rent. Also you cant have anything delivered here because your packages will get stolen from the people they hire to do whatever it is they pretend to do.

quote:

This apartment complex has some great features but for how much they are trying to charge to new renters I like to inform any potential applicants of some things. First, tenants do not have control of the a/c or heater. The complex has an old boiler/chiller system. Also, there is only one property director and so far maintenance issues have been a struggle to get filled. Many residents have experienced roach problems and the like and don't expect a fancy washer/dryer facility. For the price they want to charge for a unit that provides less than a 1,000 sq. ft I though others should know beforehand.

It’s supposed to be but then The Third Leg chimes in with something about single people and this zinger:
quote:

It is the kids that burn through capital and generate opex liabilities. I bet we have spent an average of $30,000 per kid, per year, over the last 7 years.

So apparently he would rather have been single than spend all that money on his kids. And he’s not going to fully support a woman in this day and age.

I don't know. Maybe you can do the quick search and see for yourself.

All the apartments looked way nicer than anything I ever lived in when I was single.

I did do the search, doofus. The stuff in the $1000-$1200 range look nice in the pics but are in iffy areas, most of the places are not that nice in person

The stuff that starts off at $1800 per month at least let’s you come home after dark

They are plenty nice. And its BR, most places are going to be in iffy areas.

Jesus. No wonder everyone is so broke all the time. Y'all's expectations are ridiculous.

i'm guessing you've been out of the apartment game for a long time. they can make these places look nice for apartments.com but the vast majority will be fricked.

it will be "secure and gated" but the gate is broken and open 24/7

the maintenance is nonexistent

roach infested

the "pool" doesn't get cared for and half the machines in the "gym" are broken

probably no in unit laundry and the communal laundry will have mostly broken machines

that's what you're getting in the 1000-1500 range

Lol - you have no idea where I live in BR plus I grew up in the ghetto - my mortgage is a lot less than any of those ‘nice’ apartments and my house is a lot bigger - which makes sense for a family - which was my point which I thought went along with the subject of this thread

By law most apartments in BR take section 8 (not all - most) if they are considered ‘luxury’ they do not have to take section 8 - but they also have to have a rent higher than some poverty rate thing equation
