Only way that I could see how a family would make it on $100k is if you lived in a relatively small/cheap home, don’t go on more than one vacation per year and rarely go out on dates. Between sitters and dinner I typically spend $200 on a weekend night and that’s not going anywhere fancy. I really think you’d need a salary of $250k to be comfortable on a single income

This is the American problem with money in a nutshell.

I'm in Dallas now, which is almost perfectly MCOL. Getting ahead as a single person on $100k and still being able to afford nice vacations is very doable if you're even just moderately conservative. It's a very different story than the true HCOL cities like New York, Chicago, etc. Buying a home in a desirable school district and raising a family on just that income would be a different story though and would be much harder. At least currently with what happened with the housing market the last few years.

I may have a different opinion on this is my wife didn't have substantial earning power, and/or I didn't work from home.

Most of the people I know that have a stay at home parent theses days fall into one of two categories
1) family money
2) the dad works a lot of hours in some high paying profession and so the mom is needed to be at home to run things there.

I also know couples people where both people have busy jobs they can’t break away from and some of them defiantly have/need a daytime nanny just to help with driving kids around.
