re: States, running out of money, to lower BAC to .05 for DWI to raise new revenue

They're not stupid. They want to rob taxpayers and dole that money out to deadbeats for votes. They'll also get plenty of useful fricking idiots (see posters in this thread) to champion for it as some sort of moral imperative.

They want to squeeze out every dollar they can before the autonomous cars take over.

Right
Thats why they advocate raising taxes on alcohol, and creating more paying citizens with new criminal records.
At an estimated $10k/per DWI, theres a whole new market of former law abiding citizens to squeeze. Everyone involved wins: MADD, because they have more court mandated people come to the prohibition meetings; The court, because of new court fees; police departments, because they get to seize the vehicles of the people pulled over and sell them to support the department; DA's for the new convictions; and defense attorneys for the uptick in business.
Guess who loses here? The former law abiding citizen.

This.
They’ll not let go of that golden goose. Will still have to have a sober operator.

Not trolling, brother. I have a 54 year old sister who is about 8 mentally, because a drunk driver decided his convenience was much more important than the safety of other people on the road. Crushed her skull at 2 weeks old, and left her retarded for life.
Believe it or not, there are worse things you can do than kill yourself or someone else, because you wanted to get a little drunk, and drive. Maiming someone for life is one of them, in my opinion. All because someone wanted a buzz, and wasn't responsible enough to do it without putting others at risk. Unforgivable.

They advocate raising taxes to deter alcohol sales in general. Don't get me wrong, I don't agree with raising taxes on alcohol. Nowhere in that study (at least in the linked article) does it say raising taxes has led to decreased sales or decreased fatalities in other states/countries. There's no basis for it.
But other countries that have lowered the BAC rates to .05 have seen reduced traffic fatalities. Causation doesn't equal correlation, so it would be nice to have a causation study. However, I am not opposed to lowering the limit to .05.

Anyone who honestly believes this is a fricking retard.
How is lowering the legal limit going to stop people who are already driving over the limit without giving a shite from doing so?
You know what would stop fatalities?
Put a .bac blow lock on all cars. You get it, blow, you're above the limit, your car doesn't start.
But that would effectively end all revenue to police departments.

shite, Illinois is like "get on my level".
Our property taxes are crazy - mine were over $5k this year and my condo is valued at about $300k - and that's gonna go up
Cigarette tax is out of control - $6.16 per pack...seriously
Sales tax is over 10%
Real estate transfer tax is high - on my condo at $300k it would be $3,600
They tried to tax sweetened and unsweetened beverages at $.01 per oz - so you'd basically pay more in taxes on a 2 liter than the price of the drink itself for a generic drink - but the courts struck it down
We are taxed $.07 per bag at the grocery store.
Combined federal, state, city, and county taxes on a bottle of booze are roughly 28%
That's just off the top of my head.

If youre not trolling, I could see someone having this viewpoint- thats a truly terrible to thing to experience, much less watch someone else go through.
That said, I seriously doubt people driving with a BAC of .05-.079 contribute significantly to the 10,000 people killed annually by drunk drivers, which among other things, point me to believe this is not about saving lives.
I have no problem with going after the truly drunk people on the road. Having two beers is not too drunk to drive home.

The report cites studies indicating most women over 120 pounds would reach 0.05 after two drinks. Men weighing up to about 160 pounds would likely reach the lower threshold at two, and those over 180 pounds at three.
Are they saying two drinks for a 120 lb woman would have the same effect on a 160 lb man??

This is America. 60% of our population is morbidly obese and hasn't weighed under 180 since high school.

So, prohibition. I think most people agree this is not the way to save lives. Look at the wonders the war on drugs has done to save lives and keep the cartels in check.

I have no problem with this.

It doesn't matter. .05 would be less impaired than .08 and I don't want the people who my loved ones meet on the road to be impaired at all
Then also please make the following behavioral adjustments:
1) Never, ever, get behind the wheel of a car unless you've had a full 8 hours of sleep the night before. If need be, take a vacation day any time you struggle to get to sleep on time, or call your boss and say you'll be a few hours late to get your full 8 in.
2)Locate the radio of your car, and just rip it out. No need for that distraction
3) You're going to want to avoid all driving when the sun is at a shallow angle (near sunrise and sunset). You never know when you're going to need to turn due West or due East and experience is temporary reduction in vision.
Keep in mind, in most places (if not all) places you CAN get a DUI/DWI if you blow below a 0.08 and show impairment. The 0.08 is just a limit in which the legal consequences of a DUI/DWI kick in automatically, regardless of signs of impairment. In that since, it is ALREADY illegal to drive at a 0.05 if you're impaired.
The only thing that changes with this law is that more people are going to end up in sticky situations at road blocks.
The safety argument is even an "Ends justifies the means" type argument which I would have a hard time getting behind.

Sorry to hear that.
With all due respect, your emotions aren't more important than objective fact. Thousands of studies on impaired driving have produced the .08 number. Lowering it to .05 to placate emotions and get more money doesn't equate to saving lives.

I'd be down for raising the limit to 1.0 and instituting a one strike policy.
You get a DUI, you lose your license for 2 years. When you get it back your car gets a BAC monitor lock.
If you're caught driving without a license or get a second DUI, you get executed on the spot by the officer with extreme prejudice.
I bet that would curb drunk driving.
