The U.S. government-commissioned report by a panel of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine made multiple recommendations, including significantly lowering drunken driving thresholds. It calls for lowering the blood-alcohol concentration threshold from 0.08 to 0.05. All states have 0.08 thresholds. A Utah law passed last year that lowers the state's threshold to 0.05 doesn't go into effect until Dec. 30.

The amount of alcohol required to reach 0.05 would depend on several factors, including the person's size and whether the person has recently eaten. The report cites studies indicating most women over 120 pounds would reach 0.05 after two drinks. Men weighing up to about 160 pounds would likely reach the lower threshold at two, and those over 180 pounds at three.

The panel, in its 489-page report, also recommended that states significantly increase alcohol taxes and make alcohol less conveniently available, including reducing the hours and days alcohol is sold in stores, bars and restaurants. Research suggests a doubling of alcohol taxes could lead to an 11 percent reduction in traffic crash deaths, the report said.

It also calls for cracking down on sales to people under 21 or who are already intoxicated to discourage binge drinking, and putting limits on alcohol marketing while funding anti-alcohol campaigns similar to those against smoking.

Eventually that market will get saturated when it goes to 0.0, then evaporate once automated vehicles hit the roads.

It proves that it's nothing but a money grab and not really about public safety.

I find it interesting so many states are willing to make new criminals who previously were law abiding citizens.

This demonstrates such a fricked up view of economics that's so prevalent in the public sector

If it’s all about money, why not just increase sin taxes on the sales side?

At least home brewing is still legal, and way cheaper than current prices if you're willing to put in the legwork.

It’s literally “hey, we blew all the money from taxes et al that you gave us unwillingly, so we’re gonna make an already strict law even more strict and you’re gonna have to pay more”

Possibly grabbing as much revenue as possible before self-driving vehicles render this point moot..?

A person with a .05 BAC is about as impaired as someone listening to the radio.

How is that going to raise revenue if the sell less alcohol

There should be a program that allows for you to verify your buzzed driving skills and add it as an endorsement on your license. Everyone knows there is a sweet spot around 3 beers where you actually become a better driver.

I kid, I kid. Taking any chance whatsoever theae days is just plain stupid with all of the ride ahare services available.

This is entirely f$&ked up because the margin of error on most handheld breathalyzers is up to .05. That means someone could not even be drinking and blow a DUI. The current regime is bad enough.
