At what point does shoplifting becomes robbery?
when a person is assaulted or threatened so they give up their property.
If Brown would have walked out without touching {Patel} then it would be shoplifting. When he was stopped he used force to continue the crime.
I'm not a lawyer but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express one time.

saw cigars in Brown's hand and realized he might be the robber.
I think too, when a cop sees blunt cigars in a persons hand they think pot.

Probably

Wasn't the radio caller before the police chief's first news conference today?
I guess what I meant was that there was an initial confrontation that had nothing to do with the robbery then a second one where DE connected the dots.

Looks like the police dept is prancing some local black cop around on the streets to pacify the blacks. And it's working with many of them. They're treating him like a rock star.
Long as the checks keep coming.... They DGAF

Like I said though, if he was aware of the cigars being stolen, he would have known the description of the suspects.
Shits not adding up

He just told the Post Disgust that. Apparently he needed to cover the officer's story that was not released in coordination.
No, I don't have proof of it. But this drip drip drip of information from a guy who said we can't have anything until the investigation is complete is BS.

So if a security guard tries to stop a shoplifter then he gets run over at the door it then becomes robbery/assault? Damn.

not necessarily, the original call quite possibly didn't mention the description. He could have overheard the dispatch call.
example: "Dispatch to unit ***, report to *** for a signal **, robbery, subjects stole cigars.

How in the hell does a guy that would reach across a store counter, steal items and then shove a poor guy into a snack rack in broad daylight and in front of people not have a record?
Yes - I highly suspect we were not watching his crime cherry pop on that video. Way to brazen for a first timer.

On the CCTV footage, Mike Brown hands Dorian Johnson a pack of cigars. Johnson puts the pack back down on the counter before leaving the store.

Her son, she continued, "doesn't kill, steal or rob. He doesn't do any of that.”

Yes, everyone is now stating the initial contact was a "Get out of the street"
The caller is saying that Darren got the call about the robbery as he was pulling away with descriptions of the suspect.... The Chief is saying that Darren suddenly put 2 and 2 together as he was pulling away that the cigars were likely from the Robbery.
And again, my two issues
1) Why didn't the chief clarify all of this all of this the first time when he said "Darren didn't confront them about the robbery"
2) If he knew about the cigars, he knew the description of the perps

From the beginning I thought that was a strange way for a mom to describe her son
