I'd be curious to know his criminal history. Unless it's something horrible, I don't see how Spectrum should be liable.

Me either, unless he told his boss that he was stalking houses on the clock for later armed robberies. Or something equally preposterous.

There's literally zero chance in hell this will be paid. I can't even fathom how that amount of money was deemed even remotely fair. Did this woman shite gold bricks 24/7 and give them to the family? Jesus

Holden Jr., a cable installer for Spectrum, had reportedly made a service call to Thomas's home one day and, on the next day, came back to the woman's home and killed her. Holden Jr. had returned to Thomas's home in his uniform while driving his company vehicle, the Star-Telegram reports. He stabbed Thomas to death and left her to die in front of her television while he robbed her.
Spectrum guilty
Not based on just those facts. Plaintiffs had to prove more than those facts.

Just imagine what the payout would’ve been if the killer and victim’s color were the opposite.

$7.3 billion + hate crime = $$$$$

So, this lady’s murder results in a verdict worth 9% of the company?

I guess you give the family all the money you have in the bank, declare bankruptcy, lock the doors, and walk away. And frick all the employees and customers.

People will say it's excessive, but I read up on this and Spectrum was HORRIBLE. They basically didn't do any background checks on technicians and they deleted surveillance video that showed the technician going in and out of their yard multiple times on the day of the murder.

Oh, and apparently tried to forge some document in an effort to push the case out of court and into private arbitration.

If this is all true then I say let em burn.

I hate that the award naturally becomes the story here, but I would gladly be murdered to death at 83 by a crazy person if it meant my family got that kind of money.

I could understand being murdered, but what you’ve described here is going a little too far for me.

Equity hire

Was probably a tax payer funded inmate rehabilitation program. I wonder if the verdict will cause companies to rethink this liberal restorative justice philosophy and start hiring hard working semi intelligent people again.

nice

I almost added an "absolute" in there, but even I don't know if it's worth it at that point.

You are not getting the full story. Spectrum quit conducting background checks on its hires as they deemed it to be racist. This guy had a very shady background that would have prohibited his hiring with a simple background check. Also, they kept billing the family $58.00 for the service call on which the women was killed. Went so far as to turn it over to collections. There are some other areas of wrongdoing on Spectrum's account that I won't get into. I believe the jury was sending a message to Spectrum and any other company that sends service workers into peoples homes to know who you are dealing with and not endanger the lives of innocent people.

Edit: Wrote this before I saw Damone's post.
