All I can think about is how this whole SW meltdown situation will be analyzed in business classes for years to come. Probably as an example of what NOT to do.
I remember Southwest being held UP in a business school case study about operational efficiency, etc. We're talking 25 years ago though.
I was reminded recently that they are the largest carrier.
They've been my goto carrier for personal travel. Not too cheap, not too expensive. Not as chintzy the real budget airlines.
This fiasco is mind boggling. The world's worst baitcasting backlash comes to mind. The whole system got so complex and needed perfection that they can't figure out how to unlock it. Mind blowing.
There will be books on this. I might like to read one.

Everyone: “It’s a bomb!!! Take cover!”
You: I knew I’d find it somewhere around here! Lol

Pete Buttplug is doing a bang up job as transportation secretary!

This whole thing is crazy to me. I’ve been flying for work a good bit and American is usually my least favorite airline, but this is a true disaster from Southwest. I’m fairly surprised as they’ve always been reliable for me.

I booked my kids and my flights on points and My wife flys free as my companion so I’m sure the only compensation SW is gonna give me is a butt f*** with no reach around and possibly free drink coupons.

I’m a pilot for SWA, there was no sick out and I am as angry and embarrassed as everyone. This is a technology issue that has been coming for a long time but management have buried their head in the sand. I guess we will see if it actually forces real change.
What’s the technology issue? (I’m genuinely curious at this point)

Do y’all have an eta on a return to normal?
Posted on 12/28/22 at 10:55 am to Lsut81
They are still in the midst of the mess. No one at the company truly knows how long it will take to get back to normal operations.

I find it interesting how many people hate monopolization and prefer options but now with this everyone wants Southwest to be more similar to the other airlines. Obviously this is a disaster but delta and American have had disasters of their own when a major hub goes down due to weather or whatever, so I’m not sure the perfect solution is as easy as people want.

Fair enough, I swore off Delta when in 2017 their post ATL thunderstorm meltdown for over a week made me miss my mom's 70th surprise birthday. I have however returned and prefer them to others. I mostly use AA because of where I live. Maybe you have better principles than me.
I may scour SWA website often in next few weeks for the we are sorry sales.

Learning that the Southwest Airlines meltdown is due to an antiquated crew scheduling system that assumes where a crew member is instead of working off live flight data. They’ve lost track of almost every crew member and the only way to solve it is for each one to individually call scheduling to tell them where they are. Their phone lines are swamped and I’ve seen screenshots of crew on hold for 23+ hours trying to get through to scheduling. Because scheduling can’t keep track of where crew are, crew can’t get a hotel room for themselves in order to start their FAA mandated rest period. Lots of stories of crew members booking their one hotel rooms with the hopes it’ll be reimbursed at some point. Southwest have cottoned on a little late and are only now stopping the whole operation to get their ducks in a row and to reset everything. Spirit did a similar thing in August last year.

Find SW quality has gone down a lot in last few years.

Thanks
Wait, so they don’t track their folks live? Wouldn’t that be a basic, attendance check-in software where a crew member could swipe where they’re at without physically calling in?
I mean shite, we kept live track of kids in schools during COVID with basic QR codes.
