What’s the technology issue?
according to SW employees on Reddit, SW is using 1990s era homebrew scheduling and crew assignment software. The system assumes planes and crews arrived on schedule, and continues executing the predetermined schedule unless pilots call in and ask CS to manually update the system. The software can't handle the number of updates needed, and they don't have enough folks manning the phones. Pilots are at the airport, they want to fly, they have a plane, and they have passengers.... But they can't phone in to SW to get assigned to the plane, and if they do reach someone, the software can't handle the number of requests.

Yeah it’s so crazy that they ostensibly kept kicking the can down the road on this when it seems like this scenario would eventually happen.

This Southwest thing is starting to cause me heartache.

In-laws staying an additional week. I’m about to go rent them a car.

I was able to get a $300 flight on United. I had to drive 4 hours to New Orleans airport (we normally fly out of Pensacola), but I got my son home last night.

You would think they’d prefer ease of operations too. It has to take more manpower to manually track those folks.

ETA: In the end their tech deficit saved them absolutely $0.

Wait, so they don’t track their folks live? Wouldn’t that be a basic, attendance check-in software where a crew member could swipe where they’re at without physically calling in?

I mean shite, we kept live track of kids in schools during COVID with basic QR codes

I'm just glad the government is stepping in to hold them accountable. Their cutting edge IT and systems experience is world class!!

I said this earlier in this thread, but me and the wife are supposed to fly out next Wednesday, January 4 to Denver. I found some United flights that would work for us. Would cost us a little more money, but my wife thinks we should wait a few days and see what happens. I’m going to try to convince her to rebook the flights tonight so we don’t miss them.

Safest option would be to book them as refundable 1 ways

Especially to Denver which allegedly has the largest staffing problems
