re: Southwest Airlines has cancelled 69% of its flights so far today.

Couple of reasons. Get the bag to the destination before the passengers get there so when said passengers get there they have their bag. If you get the bag to the passengers after they get there (hours orv days after they get there) the airline will have to pay a delivery service to get bags to passengers. Some airports won't allow bags to stay in the bag rooms overnight so then each bag would have to be screened again by TSA. Also if there was a feeling that tHis would happen (tons of stranded passengers in the following week and this might be hard to explain) they probably didn't want to overtax the ramp crew that is already overtaxed
I guess the question is how did the bags get to the destination. They were loaded up on a plane that ultimately didn’t takeoff. Did they get unloaded and then reloaded on some other plane that few/none of the bag owners flew on?

Ive seen a few ferry flights for southwest the past few days. Typically these are 8000-9000# flights where they don't take passengers but move the planes and flight crews to other hubs where the plane is needed.

Here's an Albuquerque to Oakland flight going currently. My guess is no passengers booked but they can load bags if there is a ground crew available

And that is about a 2 hour flight time. So at least 5k private on any decent plane.
if you are only traveling a couple of times of year I would say $3k is worth it to not have to put up with airports and commercial airlines

Nope. I mostly fly for work. I select my own flights. My flight tomorrow was a 20 yr anniv trip with my wife they ruined. Couldve had AA Delta same fare initially
The unforgivable here is that customers are in the dark. So are their employees!
SWA shouldve given anyone with a cancelled flight the ability to receive a refund via the app. But no we call and go through prompts only for the system to hang up on you. Mickey mouse airlines

“Rumor has it, it's the Pilots, flight crew and ramp agents that called for the sick out. They all need to be fired. You signed up for the job and agreed to the pay, don't use your customers as bargaining chips.”
I’m a pilot for SWA, there was no sick out and I am as angry and embarrassed as everyone. This is a technology issue that has been coming for a long time but management have buried their head in the sand. I guess we will see if it actually forces real change.

Could have trucked them in, put them on the few flights that did take off or put them on a ferry flight.

They won't be and you know that. They have sent out that same 'memo' before and not many if anyone got fired.

I've had this happen with a different airline. I just called AMEX and they handled it.

The CEO is relatively new. The blame is on Gary Kelly who stepped down this year. It also doesn’t help that the pilots and flight attendants have been under contract negotiations for 3 years. It was not a sick out but it is killing the culture that has always been there of the employees going above and beyond. Like picking up extra flying on your days off when the company needs help.

I am aware of this. The ramp is also in contract negotiations.
The culture starting shifting when Kelly took over in what 04? RX, api (i think thats what it was called after) and then airport management, was a complete failure and cost the company so much money it's hard to comprehend.
The culture with the flight crew is just starting to catch up (or be as bad how ever you want to say it) with the ground crew.

This thread was deleted from Reddit, but pretty wild.

EDIT FOR FAQs——
Checked bags are currently a disaster. Plan to not see your checked luggage for at least a month. In the interest of 100% transparency, some bags will be 30+ days lost in the system.

All I can think about is how this whole SW meltdown situation will be analyzed in business classes for years to come. Probably as an example of what NOT to do. I remember taking an Organizational Management class in grad school and there were so many case studies about how to handle these types of crisis situations. The CEO should be out in public, on the front lines, being transparent and taking responsibility for what is happening, whether it's his fault or not. As the CEO, that's what you do. That's what you're paid to do. This is just being handled so epically bad. I mean, call in the Wolf, FFS.

There's a stranded passenger at MDW saying he's passing the time by digging through all of the luggage piled up everywhere and calling the #'s on the tags to let the owners know where their luggage is.
Damn, these are actually really wholesome

It's pretty mind blowing to watch from the sidelines.

I saw a picture from Tampa of thousands of bags just sitting in claim.
Was very odd. Many of the bags it said were supposed to be in Baltimore and points north.

I guess they're so busy dealing with the passenger clusterfrick that they're just putting luggage aside to deal with later.
I fly (not Southwest) tomorrow and not planning to check a bag, but kinda want to peek at baggage claim just to see. Assuming my reserved rental car is probably going to be a bust.

Flew direct from HOU to Washington Reagan last night. Flight was delayed three hours and there was a huge pileup of bags at baggage claim. I was actually shocked when all four of my checked bags rolled out in under 15 mins.
