South Carolina death row inmate picks firing squad over electric chair

A South Carolina prisoner scheduled to be the first man executed in the state in more than a decade has decided to die by firing squad rather than in the electric chair later this month, according to court documents filed Friday.
Richard Bernard Moore, 57, is the also first state prisoner to face the choice of execution methods after a law went into effect last year making electrocution the default and giving inmates the option to face three prison workers with rifles instead.

The new law was prompted by the decadelong break, which corrections officials attribute to an inability to procure the drugs needed to carry out lethal injections.
In a written statement, Moore said he didn’t concede that either method was legal or constitutional, but that he more strongly opposed death by electrocution and only chose the firing squad because he was required to make a choice.
“I believe this election is forcing me to choose between two unconstitutional methods of execution, and I do not intend to waive any challenges to electrocution or firing squad by making an election,” Moore said in the statement.
Moore’s attorneys have asked the state Supreme Court to delay his death while another court determines if either available method is cruel and unusual punishment. The attorneys argue prisons officials aren’t trying hard enough to get the lethal injection drugs, instead forcing prisoners to choose between two more barbaric methods.

With the cost of bullets these days that is way too expensive of an option. A good hemp rope from a nice limber oak tree branch that has some bounce would do just fine.
Environmentally friendly and reusable just like the environmentalist like.

If he chooses this, then I’m not sure why they are complaining about the execution style

I can respect this.. Well, respect might be the wrong word considering he is a killer on death row, but will it be streamed anywhere?

I don't see how anybody can argue that instant death by any means is cruel.
Firing squad.
Decapitation.
Hand grenade.
You name it.
As for unusual, who gives a frick?

Fitting for someone that shot a convenience store clerk to death.

Seems like every junkie in the US can find fentanyl. How about we use that?

Why not death by fire ants?

Isn’t 3 a low number to have on a firing squad? Especially if one of them is shooting a blank.

Who mourns for the executioners?

Guillotine what probably be a pretty painless way to die. Would be weird looking around until your brain died though.

I’d much prefer firing squad to electric chair. Hell, if I have to be executed, just put me on my knees and shoot me in the back of the head.

I thought only one of the three had the live round?

Or you could just send him to Chicago and let the other trash take him out for free.

This always amazes me. We know that fentanyl in very small doses leads to a very quick and painless death. And thanks to our neighbors to the south and/or pharmaceutical industry innovation it's something we have plenty of. Let him go out of this world high as frick.
I feel like a bottle of sleeping pills would also work.

I think 1 is a blank and the rest are live rounds.
