CDC just released the numbers
34,000 less americans died in March this year than the average for March from 2012-2019
So since the argument has shifted from “overwhelming hospitals” to “saving lives”, I’m not sure how one can logically not argue we lock down forever

Can we be honest about this no matter how “mean” it might sound......if a business or person, barring long term layoff, was broken because of a month shut down. It/they were doomed anyways. We’ve been shut down for a month not six months or a year. This is what I don’t get. Again if people don’t get their jobs back totally understandable.

So the narrative that flattening the curve by distancing and closing businesses doesn’t save lives is BS. Thxs for sharing, but I really doubt the CDC really knows how many Americans died in March.

No doomsday here - For the most part, the nation has done exceptionally well.
As we were told it would happen, the situation has clearly shown us the true side of people. It's my own weakness but it frustrates me that the conspiracy theorist fanatics and thin skinned AR carrying extremists will attribute turning the corner to themselves, that is a clear mis-attribution.
Credit goes to those who are following the practical stay at home guidelines, not contributing to political conspiracies and those working tirelessly to get this thing under control.

Maybe, just maybe the numbers have been lower BECAUSE we needed and sheltered in place at the outset of the virus ... Obviously , we can’t do it forever and need to open the country back up in phases like we are doing . If we had done nothing , cases would have been way up at this point no doubt . Deaths and positive tests would have been much much higher and the economy was going to be affected either way

I'm sure the quarentine also affected the annual death toll from other infectious diseases such as flu

Depends on the type of business. If you were sitting on alot of perishable inventory that you can't sell, and you still have payables on that inventory, and rent, and other payables, and your revenue for the month is zero, and the government says it's going to be another month, then yes you cut your losses and shut it down, file for bankruptcy protection to keep what little you have left.

I don't blame the governors and mayors though. I blame the hyperventilating doomcasters, to include the ones in this very thread, that screamed bloody murder for the government to "do something!!!" and the media that egged them on making it seem like bumfrick Iowa was going to have the same amount of dead as NYC.
Alabama has about 5 million people. As of today, there are 82 deaths, and 553 hospitalization since 3/13/2020. 73% of the deaths were over 65 y/o. I suspect a great majority were in very bad health before they caught the virus.
