funny you mention this. That's come true over in Italy and will soon be the same in all the other countries that tout a finite resource that relies on others' service as a "right."

Like what? Seriously you can't just say vague shite like this. A lot of People still aren't listening to the governments orders.

For starters he should have never fired the pandemic team. He should have kept them in place so they could help prep for this kind of thing ahead of time. Their entire reason for existing so another pandemic in the US similar to H1N1 could be curbed.

Once we saw what was happening in China we should have ramped up production for tests, medical supplies, and begun planning for potential financial packages for affected industries. Rejecting the WHO tests was asinine. We also should have started construction on temporary hospitals specifically made for people with COVID in an effort to blunt any impact on our healthcare system.

He should have cut off air travel to/from China IN FULL and not just for Chinese nationals, Americans and anyone else should have been held out as well. So many are now shrugging at the idea of elderly dying from this so you should have had no problem with the very few Americans who were over there being forced to stay while we saw how this played out. Any other country that had a case pop up should have also been immediately put on the same kind of travel ban. Any city and it's surrounding suburbs that had an outbreak should have been immediately put on a 3 week shelter at home order with financial packages for those populaces in place to help them deal with the loss of income.

He should have NEVER played the threat down. He did it many times from calling it a hoax meant to hurt his Presidency, to saying "it's only 5 people it will be gone in a week", to "It's only 15 people it will be gone in a week", to "the numbers are going down", to "it's just the flu and many people can get better even sitting at work", or going into a televised meeting so ignorant of the situation that he actually asked a doctor if we could just make a really good flu vaccine to combat it.

These are just some minor things that really could have helped but he didn't do it.

If Dems had criticized him at the time for doing all of that well... who cares? He could have pointed to what is happening around the world and said "I tried to make you safe when nobody else would" and he would have cruised to a landslide victory for a second term against a creaky Joe Biden who has almost as bad of a habit as exaggerating, bending the truth, and flat out lying as he does. Now he actually has a chance of losing to the Dem equivalent of "let's go with the safe feel good pick Bob Dole to beat this incumbent we all hate" move that always fails.

they weren't fired, transferred

On March 13, The Post published an article by Beth Cameron, a former Obama administration official, titled “I ran the White House pandemic office. Trump closed it.” She argued that “eliminating the office,” which she headed from September 2016 to March 2017, “has contributed to the federal government’s sluggish domestic response” to the coronavirus pandemic.
Three days later, The Post published an article by Tim Morrison, a former Trump administration official, titled “No, the White House didn’t ‘dissolve’ its pandemic response office. I was there.” He countered that office, which he oversaw for about a year starting in July 2018, was folded into another one to streamline a bloated organization and “the combined directorate was stronger because related expertise could be commingled.”

now Obama HAD closed the agency
After Barack Obama became president in 2009, he eliminated the White House Health and Security Office, which worked on international health issues. But after grappling with the 2014 Ebola epidemic, Obama in 2016 established a Directorate for Global Health Security and Biodefense at the NSC. A directorate has its own staff, and it is headed by someone who generally reports to the national security adviser.

just like the border babies in cages, Obama did the same but mass media ignores this
Trump consolidated, now check my post history you will see Im not really a Trump fan, he's not a free market conservative
but to blame Trump for this is pathetic

this would have happened regardless of who was in office, China only admitted it existed mid-Jan,, 2 months later its worldwide

This is such in hindsight bull shite. It’s so simple to just start building temporary hospitals

You’re a fricking retard if you think barring AMERICANS in JANUARY from coming into the United States would be entertained by anybody

Irrelevant. People were gonna go out and spread it regardless.

Yes. Building hospitals and banning all Americans from coming home are just minor things

What about state and local leaders who are closer to things in their area? Or does it all depend on what letter is by their name? All the Rs have been outstanding while the Ds have done a horrible job?

Let’s say everything goes back to normal in a month as you suggest. You think coronavirus magically disappears when that happens? How are we not going to end up in the exact same situation we’re currently in?

Easy. As soon as our supply chains have recovered and we have the case loads under control we switch to a mitigation strategy which South Korea has used very successfully. Everyone goes back to work and school, but we continue the hygiene and much of the social distancing. No fans at ball games, no parades or concerts. Restaurants are back in business. Testing is being done pervasively and constantly. And we are quarantining those who test positive, and testing those they have recently been in contact with.

Mitigation will keep the new cases low enough that our hospitals can easily bear the burden. When a hot spot starts to develop we lockdown briefly to get it under control. We do that until a vaccine is available, then we party!!!!

Maybe my view is different than most, but as a 20 something old I don't view my life as more valuable or important than someone that is 70 years old. Old people have a right to life as much as young do.

That's sweet, but it's a loopy idea. If I run over a 40 year old and a 70 year old, am sued, and found to be at fault, I pay more for the 40 year old than the 70 year old. Our society values life at $50,000 - $125,000 (roughly) per man-year. Morally there might be no difference, but actually there is.

Seriously what could the president do to stop a highly contagious virus in a country of 300 million

He could have gotten serious about preparing our medical infrastructure and supply chain. That was his big screwup. On the other hand, he deserves a lot of credit for reacting quickly on closing our borders to viral areas.

However, if you go back on that now and send people back to work like nothing happened, it will be a colossal failure. Severe cases and deaths will rise to the millions and flood hospitals if you go back RIGHT NOW.

I'm gonna need some linkage or some bit of info on you and why I should believe you. You throw "deaths will rise to the millions" around like casual conversation. Weren't millions supposed to have died already? So, now they will? OKtiger

You could slowly watch 7-10 million people die because of overall hospital resource shortage
quote:

It’s basic math... and the number was probably a lower estimate. The fact is a lot more people will die because of hospital resource/staff shortage from other health causes compared to COVID cases that would be flooding the system.

That WILL happen if you go back right now. It’s not a fricking hoax

There are roughly 4 million ICU admissions per year in the US. If the admission rate were flat throughout the year, that would be roughly 333k ICU admissions per month. In reality, this number is higher during the peak of flu season and lower during warmer months. But let’s go with 333k/month to make it easy.

Typical mortality for ICU admits ranges from 8-19%. Meaning 8-19% of these patients will die no matter what. Again, let’s call it 8% for the sake of argument. That gives us 307k ICU admits per month that are at risk of dying due to these resource/staff shortages you mentioned.

Most of the “uncontrolled” models I’ve seen project an intensive care surge of <2 months. That means that if every single non-COVID ICU admit in the country died due to neglect, it would only add up to 614k non-COVID deaths.

Given all of this, how in the ever living frick did you come up with 7-10 million?

I think that's a "holy shite" number but, really, it's not an unreasonable number based on what we're seeing.

Today between noon and 8pm EDT, 100 people died. This chart is worrisome, especially being we still have states in this country who aren't acting at all or are even just taking half-hearted measures. Most of this is due to NYC. What happens when FL starts hitting? NOLA continues on its current trend? What if Trump tells everyone to "pack churches" on Easter Sunday? 500k is very much in reach, unfortunately.

-If you drop the restrictions, the infection will spread nationwide.

-That will kill many people since the vast majority of Americans (esp in Red states) are unhealthy.

-It will also flood hospital beds, which blocks other patients with CAD, COPD, GI bleeds etc from getting care which will lead to more deaths

-In turn, the general public will not show up to work in the midst of an uncontrolled global pandemic. People will not go out in droves to shop.

-The workforce is still not present for jobs leading to small business closures and job loss.

Congrats, you have the same economic problem as you do now but, with millions of Americans dying. We're not going to collapse the health care system because your 401k is experiencing a dip.

I'm done trying to explain this to you because nothing that you tell me can convince me going back to normal life right now would be more beneficial for the country. It won't.

Or just willing to face the reality of the situation? I think a lot of people are having a difficult time coming to the realization that we're literally living through an historic moment right now. These people think pandemics, depressions, world wars, etc., that's all shite from the past that will never happen again. Well, surprise!
