Its probably the way its happening with the mayor being a beligerent bitch obvously pandering for media attention.

I am a diehard white supremacist of course. These statues were the only way I could keep the blacks in New Orleans in check
And they clearly did their job since Atlanta and Houston outgrew New Orleans since these kept blacks in New Orleans in check except for that outlier known as the city of Richmond which has seen an economic explosion during the same time period and surpassed New Orleans too.
PS nice job with the tongue in cheek comment.

I've honestly not seen much national media on it.
Looks like he's being ignored, thus his big push to try and get in the spotlight

no it's okay i get it.
Hahaha...thanks. I used to like him ok, but as time has gone on (like many politicians), he has become more full of $hit and it didn't start with the monument stuff.

so on the laundry list of items to be fixed in new orleans, this is at the bottom of the totempole, and mitch landrieu is grandstanding?
Yes - completely grandstanding. I don't think they needed to be removed at all (though I didn't mind the Battle of Liberty Place Statue because that's not a big deal around here and it was a little shadier in nature). We have so many issues around here and this guy had what seemed like the whole police force out there the other night around a statue. And he had snipers on a building for the removal of that other statue. Completely ridiculous and unnecessary.

I wonder how many potholes could be fixed with all this monument removal money

Maybe 30 residents of New Orleans actually want them down. Make them choose between a BBQ and taking down monuments, and that number drops to 10

I've never taken a tour of New Orleans to see the monuments. The only monuments that I could name off the top of my head were Andrew Jackson as it is used in many iconic pictures and paintings, and Lee because of Lee Circle.
I suspect most other people also had no clue that most of these monuments had anything to do with the confederacy.
Mitch jumped on the bandwagon when it became popular to rename or remove anything with a potentially offensive history. I think most of the outrage is people that feel the need to push back against his politics. Others legitimately want to preserve these statues as they see them as great pieces to help teach history, but I feel those people are largely in the minority.

Because NOLA has a shitload bigger problems than some statues that are suddenly offensive after 100 years. Increasing violent crime rate, budget deficit, streets in complete disrepair, severely undermanned NOPD. But the mayor's attention has been on taking down harmless statues instead of fixing problems that actually affect people's day to day lives.
And then there's these PC liberals. These statues are just the start for them. They want Andrew Jackson's statue down too, along with the renaming of dozens of streets and schools. They're never going to be satisifed. Once they succeed at removing whatever they deem offensive today, they'll find new things to be offended by tomorrow. They're a very loud minority that ruins shite for the majority of people who don't agree with their agenda, but have jobs and families and don't have spare time to go protest, or don't want to risk the fallout of some crazed SJW finding out their names and where they work and trying to get them fired.

interesting. so you feel this outrage is almost entirely political. as is the removal itself?
Posted on 5/18/17 at 8:21 pm to LSU Fan 90812
I'm tired of allowing the vocal minority to get their way. Every time we succumb to their demands they just find another reason to be offended. Sooner or later they need to be told STFU and enjoy living in the. Eat country in the world.

to counter, i think some people would argue that they always have been offensive.

The motives are disingenuous.

I've never even been to New Orleans, but just like ISIS, I detest people that ruin history, whether good or bad.

Then why weren't the statues talked about for years? They weren't even a blip on the offended radar until the last 2 years or so.

I've often compared them to locusts. They destroy one field then move on to the next.
It's interesting to see the varying levels of interest and goals of these various groups. Some want to do it for immediate political purposes, some just to piss people off, and some to destroy normal American or western cultural identity. But they all work together on these types of projects.
Like you said. This is only the beginning.

Correct. Its symbolic, the cure is worse than the cause, a mayor should represent all people and probably relatively few were offended in the first place

Yep, it's no different than their destruction of the ancient monuments at Palmyra

Correct. Its a political ploy by the mayor for his own gain

It's not about history or racism or slavery.
It's about power and facism.
Mitch just said in his press conference only the statues are coming down including Lee. Only the statues.
So he's just going to leave these pedestals and shite all over the city.
No thought or care about how they look or the damage he caused or the way he makes these places look like blighted shite.
The citizens and the idea of democracy just got Bitch slapped by facism. Mitch unilaterally decided to use public funds to vandalize private property and steal private art work off of private property that was the current subject of both litigation and legislation.
Let that sink in. Let that gravity of Mitch's actions sink in
