Dear Mitch Landrieu,
Do you think you could stop fricking women who aren't your wife and squandering tax money while shitting on your family name and ignoring your electorate long enough to address even one issue that actually matters?
Crime? Education? Poverty? Streets? Infrastructure? Professional careers? Attracting big businesses? Keeping college grads in state?
Unaddressed. Not even attempted to be addressed.
Statues literally no one cared about?
Unilaterally brought down in less than a week using the biggest, fastest, and most efficient coordination of public funds, private contractors, and public utilities maybe ever seen in this city.
And if you were going to rip the statues down, could you have put a little foresight or given the least amount of shite of what the sites would look like when you ripped the statues down?
Because now city park looks like vandalized Iraq. You couldn't have sanded down the pedestal and written city park? Or painted the bricks white.
Do you have any plan for that? Or is your plan to take a shite on this city before you leave?
Can you let us know if you decide to destroy any more possible private property without regard for legal process to further your own goals?
Signed,
Tax paying people of New Orleans

Not sure if serious but for grins and giggles, I'll play along...
What's happening in New Orleans goes far beyond the actual monuments themselves. For one, this is a racially charged bully pulpit at work. The monuments are just one step of a much larger plan. One that includes erasing / renaming schools, streets, etc. To paraphrase Van Jones, it's an "anti-whitelash."
You also have the fact the New Orleans has for a long time faced far greater challenges that have either been ignored or continue to be problematic, with no solutions in sight. Crime is constantly soaring, city resources are forever dwindling, corruption / patronage continues to run almost unchecked and many of the best qualified / educated feel that they have no choice but to go elsewhere in order to thrive.
Finally, you have someone that instead of serving the populace that elected him, has instead chosen to become a maniacal despot. He knows that much of his administration has been a complete failure, so this is his little F U as he's about to be forced out of office. He's also basically rubbing it in the face of people that disagree with him, for reasons that I can't comprehend.
To summarize, he's decided that blatant lying / pandering in order to try and secure his legacy and a possible post mayoral position is more important than serving his city. It doesn't matter to him that he's used unskilled labor (firefighters and policemen that should instead be at their assigned stations) completely bottled up city traffic and resources, horribly inconveniencing businesses and citizens. Worst of all, he used the horrible events in Charleston 2 years ago to seize upon this opportunity.
So, for the sake of pushing his agenda and his "legacy"...he's created a bad divide among his citizens, created opportunities for criminals to strike when the police are otherwise occupied and left horrible eyesores in public places, because the "contracted work" had neither the proper equipment nor the proper experience to properly remove the monuments. Intentionally or otherwise, he's ultimately put on display the many failures of himself, his city and his administration.

Who are these people because I'm heavily invested in Orleans Parish whether it be politics, philanthropic matters, or business across all racial and political spectrum and the first time I even heard this was an issue was in 2015 when Malcom Suber took it upon himself to make it an issue after he was paroled from Angola Prison. Before 2015 I would like to see the name of one person who argued for the taking down of these statutes minus the one that was controversial and I don't have an issue with the White League being taken down but the others I do.

Because at this point they were part of the city and no one worshipped them like the kkk.
The city's problems are not due to the statues or racism.
The city doesn't have the time and money to waste on them.

3 of the last 4 mayors before Half Moon were African American. Obviously Ernest or Marc Morial, nor Nagin thought they were so offensive that they were a top priority to dedicate a significant amount of time and city resourcrs to have them taken down.
I just don't like the way its been handled. Mitch was going to have his way, no matter what anyone else said. Then he rushed to have PGTB and Lee taken down this week because he was afraid of the state senate possibly passing the monument bill soon.

Its symbolic, the cure is worse than the cause, a mayor should represent all people and probably relatively few were offended in the first place
The funny part is that during Mardi Gras, one of the most heavily populated areas of black people on St. Charles Ave. is right by Lee Circle (and everybody has a great time). I had never heard one person in my life (black or white) mention anything about the statue being offensive until Mitch's comments. Apparently, there was some talk about it being offensive many years ago by a small group, but it obviously died down.
Also, Landrieu voted in favor of Louisiana being able to make Confederate Battle Flag license plates in the late 90s as a state representative. When asked about it, he said he regrets it now and didn't think about it back then, but I'm sure he knew what the Confederate Battle Flag was back then too. He's slick.

I've seen like 4 people upset about that and they were from out of state.
I'm upset as a red blooded American who hates government corruption and fascism.

Just think how many Germans and Japanese could lay a claim of offense by exploiting the images of their dead relatives in that museum

Me too. There's a story behind all monuments and if they cause someone unfamiliar with those stories to want to learn more, I believe that's overwhelmingly positive. Allow folks to form their own opinions.
Many people in this country already don't appreciate the history that surrounds them. Removing statues or renaming locations only drives further ignorance.
Knowledge is good.

The problem is that people try to view these figures through the lens of 21st century PC culture who, given enough time, could vilify Jesus Christ himself.

because it is more self-righteous virtue signalling that you cannot get away from unless you want to be a hermit
It will be something else tomorrow and something else next week.
The cool guys in Venezuela didn't care about anything in 1999 either.
