to counter, i think some people would argue that they always have been offensive.

The removal of these individual monuments doesn't really bother me, it's the overall narrative that concerns me. Where does it all end, and what is the benefit of removal? Are we going to shut down Mt. Vernon because George Washington owned slaves and that offends people? Do we need to rename our state because it was once a part of the confederacy and that offends people? Do we need to adopt a new flag because the stars and stripes were flown on a majority of slave trade ships and that offends people?

Furthermore, I think we can use the reminders of a darker time in our nation's history as a reminder that we are not a perfect nation and we continue to become a better nation in light of our past mistakes.

History should never be erased.

Those who do so are no better than the very worst of history.

Not sure if you're being a jackass or not, but on a smaller scale, that's the way that I see it.

interesting. so you feel this outrage is almost entirely political. as is the removal itself?

It's the current state of politics in our country. Faux outrage because someone on the other side of the aisle did something.

As I said:

Extending this argument out logically you should dismantle our country.

We slaughtered and obliterated an entire race of people to keep our country, fought a revolution and specifically said we'll keep slaves during it and no one but white male landowners get rights, then said blacks count as 3/5ths of a person for population purposes but never get rights or to vote.

We also took rights from or refused to give rights to Italians, Irish, Chinese, Women, Gays, Bastard children, handicapped, retards, children, old people, poor people, etc.......

Where do you stop it? Where do you draw the line?

You think any native Americans want statues of Washington? Or Jackson?

You can find a reason to be upset about any part of history. It's history.

You think the gay community loves MLK, Jr?

You think the southern historians love Lincoln?

History is history. Learn from it. Study it. Honor it. It's where you came from.

Things don't happen in a vacuum. Different times have different standards.

Should no one study and Greek or Roman history because they allowed pedophilia?

This was never about racism or slavery or any of that window dressing bullshite.

This is about power, misplaced anger, reverse racism, and political gain. Nothing else.

Anyone who actually thinks the powers that be removed these monuments for some bullshite humanitarian purpose needs to be smacked in the head.

mitch landrieu and politics aside. not being facetious.

why do you care? do you have a personal connection to them? do you just "consider it a part of the city that's been there for a long time"? do you feel it memorializes your fallen great grandpa/uncle/mother/aunt? is it "that guy was a hero, he should have a monument"? do you "wish the south had won the war"? is it because "affected" people are getting what they want when they shouldn't?

i'm not gonna argue here. just gonna hang up and listen.

congrats for bringing this up for the 82nd time. I think everyone has explained their reasoning. And except for the 1% who are just white supremacists the rest of us never cared about the monuments, but we do care about Mitch's motives and priorities

It's becoming more of a trend that Southerners are only allowed to be ashamed of their history.

I look at the overall cost squandered away in a month or two and just think "what if we decided to hire 600 top notch police officers for $100,000 for just one year of service" because to me it'd be money better spent or "wasted". A change was made to address FEELINGS and I agree with a comedian that in his routine talks about people getting their feelings hurt. He says something to the effect of who cares, you're upset and that still doesn't change anything. It's the equivalent of Allen Iverson getting grilled over practice.

Exact same argument I see the black leaders say when whites tell them to forget about Slavery.

Nola is a free museum that all you have to do is walk about to read and look. Little by little it will be gone

You're either lying or have very selective memory.

ETA: oooh. I see I got two of the more prolific BSers to get upset.

Must have stuck a nerve. You know you have spoken some truth when they have to stop what their doing and respond.

Make it three. Roger is my favorite though so I may just stick with him.
