Correct and its history are removed which is one of the reasons people come to visit this city and why people who are from here associate with some of the monuments. Beauregard and Robert E. Lee statutes were incredible pieces of art which sadly reduces the uniqueness of New Orleans quite a bit.

i can't disagree with you.

A lot of Southerners had family that died in a war for their freedom. Removing the statues is removing their history. Once all the statues are moved they will move on to street names, schools and will eventually want anyone who still supports Southern Heritage to be eliminated.

so you feel like the statues themselves represent the dead? not the dozens of confederate gravesites scattered throughout the city and state?

so it sounds like you have an attachment to robert e. lee as a historical figure who is statue worthy?

Not necessarily. The fact that they're making him out to be some blood thirsty monster is the part that bothers me. They can do that to just about every person in American history.

Absolutely but here the taking down of this monument in particular is a move past the slippery slope. This monument has long been a meeting place for all races and religions my entire life during Mardi Gras and other major events in the area. Its also a really a sad indictment on how easy it is for one person to create a atmosphere of racial division where there hasn't been racial division about Lee Circle in the last 100 years.

It's been up for over 100 years and now they have a problem with it, never mind all the crime and murder to deal with.

i don't see what that has to do with the monuments themselves. can you explain?

Yes, I can explain. If Mitch Landrieu wants them gone, F*** IT, I want them. He's a pandering jackass and a liar. I can explain that too if you want.

from what i understand, the circle is going to be there still right?

Yes, the circle will still be there. But I live down the street and when you drive up the street and see him way up there in the middle of the circle, it's visually appealing and has been there for many decades.

I don't really give a shite about the confederacy and I know some just fake like they care about "history," but most have a problem because Mitch created this big issue when there was no problem and now is spending big bucks to get what he wants when this should have been on the bottom of a to-do list.

I've driven past Beauregard hundreds of times... marched past Lee during parades

they're landmarks in the city... something that was just nice to look at as you passed by the area even if you didn't know who they commemorated

look what was left of both Davis & Beauregard... look like a rundown broken piece of junk from a robbery (kinda like some areas of the city)

plus I actually would not be surprised if property values in the areas are actually decreased by this... who wants to see what's left on a daily basis

just a stupid, stupid, stupid thing to spend what I assume will be $1,000,000+ on (once adding overtime for all the NOPD, etc, etc. to the expenses)... which at least in the short term... will have a negative impact on the city

i definitely don't feel that way about him. seems to me have been a great general choosing between two untenable positions. who served out of duty and conscience.

so you're actually upset about the vilification of confederates?

would you feel like they could be replaced with things to fill that void? or is there an attachment to those heroes specifically.

like a drew brees statue

If you want to honor someone else, do it seperately. Hell, make it bigger and better somewhere else if you really have such a hardon to do so, such that it completely overshadows all these arcane relics (in a city whose whole existence is based in large part on arcane relics - but I digress).

To just throw something up, however, just to replace these "nuisances" (which you know is all they're going to do) seems to just be cheapening whoever you'd ostensibly be trying to "honor."

In other words, it's fricking lame.

Hey, but you're above it all.

A naked revision of history, along with book burning levels of censorship (such as this is, the government is censoring monuments based on political viewpoints), should scare everyone.

Will MLK statues be next? Or something you might hold dear? Look beyond the end of your nose.

Yes, it's a slippery slope. Lee paid his dues and was granted a pardon. They even turned his family estate into Arlington cemetery.
True, a US National cemetery that has Confederate soldiers buried there. Lee is so hated that the United States Military Academy has a statue of him on its grounds.
