You have to claim the winnings as an individual, you can't do it as a an LLC or 501(c)(3) - lol. Any estate planning you do after that can wait. LLCs, trusts, all of that happens down the road. Get the cash.

You can as a partnership though and still do it anonymously, at least in Louisiana, like the family in Lafayette. If you win, the last thing you do is draw attention to yourself.
I disagree with getting the cash before any planning. It's just dumb. You 100% make plans for the money before getting that kind of lump sum. Not planning is what leads to many sudden millionaires to lose all their money in just a few years.

Need to have a lot of the tax plans in place before hand. May be multiple people on ticket, might split claim among several foundations, etc.
If it were me I would not be in a hurry. I know there are multiple people or banks that would front me any short term cash I may want with that as the back stop. Hell, a lot of bankers and attorneys would just to "earn" my future business.
Also, in Texas a trust can claim winnings, someone has to be there for the press conference but that would be a low level attorney's job at my new found firm and his only line would be "no comment" or "that information is protected by attorney client privilege."

A piece of paper is better than an insured account?
We're not talking LA weird lNapoleonic Code here.

It's possible that it was a pool. That would make sense.

It seems like a lot could happened in 3 weeks. Like your house burns down or you die in a car wreck and your family never gets the money.

Well, since this is a Louisiana-based website, we kinda are. The problem with claiming without any planning is every single person is going to go out and start spending money. If you do that unchecked for long enough, you run out of money. Also, if you walk into hundreds of millions of dollars all of a sudden, every Dick and Jane you have ever met will have their hand out looking for pieces of it. If you don't have a plan for this and give a friend "X" amount of money, every other friend, family member, etc will become resentful.
The planning is for your protection.

With that much cheese about to be given to a single person, you can bet criminals around the world are hoping for a public claim.
I’d hire top notch security detail first and foremost, 24/7 365 until I died.

I wouldn’t let go of the ticket if it was mine. I would literally not stop and eat or sleep when I found out I won. I would just clutch it in my hand until I claimed it.
I’d take annuity anyways so I wouldn’t have that much to get in order right off the bat. 55 million per year is plenty

As said there’s a good chance this was one by a pool of people, like an office.
If that’s the case, it makes it much more complicated.
But if that were the case, I’d be surprised if we didn’t know already. As that many people likely one of them bought a Ferrari and spilled the beans.

Maybe it is all a scam. Lottery says 1 winning ticket sold in Dogpatch, SC.... in reality, no ticket sold.
1. Wait 180 days
2. No winner comes forward
3. ?????
4. Profit.
Big lotto convinced the entire country to throw money their way and it all goes back to them. Nice bonus structure.

I wouldn't take the annuity. There is a greater than I am comfortable with chance that a bunch of ocasio cortez/bernie sanders socialists will come into power and decide that no one "needs" 55mil a year.

Lol. You put 650 up. And help out family and friends and yourself with 50 million. It’s not hard

It would be real smart to wait for a day when the news cycle goes crazy. Mueller indictment, a war is started, a massive terror attack or something. That way you get lost in the commotion

Once all of the affairs are in order, they'll buy a big house, sit down on the world's comfiest couch, turn on a 100" 8K TV, sipping whiskey more expensive than most car payments.....
then they'll get a call from Joe Smith, asking them about their expiring warranty on their 2007 Honda Pilot

Yeah - the way you do this is literally a "hundreds of millions of dollars" decision, so, frick yeah, you take your month or two to line it up correctly.

there was an interesting reddit post linked here in the lottery thread prior to the drawing. Most of you suggesting or saying you would run out and claim the money quickly or publicly should try to find the post. It would provide you with some reasons you would be screwing up and also give you some insight as to why the winner may not have come forward yet.
think this is it
go to the long arse post that starts "now your f-----"

I tried to find the same post earlier. Even before reading that particular post, I knew you immediately hire a good lawyer and accountant but it broke it down with why you don't go with your local estate attorney, etc. It also explained how you do many more steps and why...it was very informative. Anyone not taking steps to protect themselves are either dumb, ignorant or both.
