Yea, I was thinking this. I am sure you can prove that you have the ticket then set up the accounts. But I am no lawyer. You would think what ever the situation is, things could move quickly

I'd be too worried about something happening to the ticket to wait this long.

I mean it’s not like you leave the ticket on your bed stand until you officially claim it. Your team of lawyers knows, probably has a copy of it with some legal info, and then the ticket is placed in a bank vault somewhere.

Think about this though, in 179 days they will have lost $9mil in interest of a 2.5% cd by not claiming it.

Every move that’s made is worth millions.

If you won $1.6B, I am not concerned about the $9M in 3 months a CD could provide. I am concerned with protecting myself, my interest and making sure the money once claimed is protected.

First thing i'd do is take a pic with it (cant sign it), and buy a fire proof case, and look for maybe a small fingerprint lockbox (if made). Probably look into the best options baseball collectors have now adays. Ha.

Then head to the nearest bank with a safe deposit box, and put the family member I wanted to handle it if I passed as the only person with access. Yadda yadda yadda. Throw a copy of the pic, and instructions.

I wouldnt tell a soul, but I would WITHOUT a doubt come on this site to start threads* about what should be done to properly vet lawyers etc. Ha!! Seriously though....i would...some of yall are bat shite cray cray, but some of yall are pretty smart. At least help clear it up some muck. Ha

About the best I can think of as I worked on the whole trust creation.

*ETA: Obviously without saying I'm sitting on a winning ticket. Ha.

That is a great point. And I know zero about those type of "amounts" and how its insured but can you invest a billion dollars and have it "secured".

Like insured by the FDIC secure? I don't think so.

I believe the current Max per account is $250,000. It was only $100,000 in the '90s. Short of a very large stack of cash in an undisclosed secure location and foregoing any interest or market gain, I don't know how you protect a billion dollars from market risk or bank failure.

Or Dec 28 at the same time.

And that's why you take the time and hire a lawyer who specializes in handling this kind of money.

If Jeff Bezos's bank gets robbed,or fails think he's losing everything but $250K that is insured? Of course not.

The kid who has the ticket is young, financially inexperienced, but works for a company that is taking good care of him helping him not screw this up at the outset. Chances are that he probably will in the long run, but for now, he is listening and taking good advice.

yep. I've always heard that if you win the lottery in any reasonable capacity, you should call an attorney and accountant first before even claiming it.

When I thought about the same type of situation, I figure I would immidiately open up a safety deposit box and tell your lawyer where the ticket is first.

What is the actual procedure with the ticket? The lottery knows where it was bought and they award the business like $50k right? So assuming they know the time too? So the business can look at their security footage?

I mean I gotta assume that if someone actually steals the winning ticket, there's a way to verify the real winner?

I agree. I'm simply saying that with $100s of millions, every move you make can be millions in income or expense.

That's why you take it very slow.

Interesting read from the reddit. A Hollywood makeup artist makeover would be a good move if the picture is unavoidable. The kidnapping/ransom threat to family members really wouldn't have occurred to me but would definitely need to be considered before claiming the prize. Then a name change and complete vanishing act for a year or two seems pretty obvious. I've got some relatives in a tiny mountain village on the Austrian Italian border who I've only met a handful of times but I could make it well worth their time to help disappear me and my little tribe. Very remote. Third cousins in Ireland as well who I've never met but who still maintain correspondence with other local family members. It's all sort of pointless theorizing but interesting nonetheless. Ah, at the lies I would tell.
