Yeah, roving bands of thieves got him.

Don't underestimate what people will do for that ticket.

Or so I've been told.

I thought it was the auto mechanic in South Carolina?

He works for a subcontracting company that makes parts for the BMW plant here in Greer SC.

With money market rates at 1.5%, the winner has missed out on nearly $700k in interest on the lump sum net of taxes since the drawing.

Interesting read from the reddit. A Hollywood makeup artist makeover would be a good move if the picture is unavoidable. The kidnapping/ransom threat to family members really wouldn't have occurred to me but would definitely need to be considered before claiming the prize. Then a name change and complete vanishing act for a year or two seems pretty obvious. I've got some relatives in a tiny mountain village on the Austrian Italian border who I've only met a handful of times but I could make it well worth their time to help disappear me and my little tribe. Very remote. Third cousins in Ireland as well who I've never met but who still maintain correspondence with other local family members. It's all sort of pointless theorizing but interesting nonetheless. Ah, at the lies I would tell.

Why all of this nonsense?

There are nearly 3,000 billionaires in the world. Obviously most of them live without all of these crazy contingency plans.

True, but there's a different perception about a windfall. Friends, relatives, even total strangers think they're entitled to a piece of it. Kidnappers are probably a longshot-although not outside the realm of possibility. The sheer nuisance factor of ever grifter and hard luck story beating a path to your door would be a bigger issue.

He is a 24 yr old engineer who worked for ZF Transmissions here in Fountain Inn,SC.

Went out to his vehicle at break when it was announced the winning ticket had been sold in SC. Checked his ticket, found out he had the winner and was said to have told a couple coworkers he had it and left the plant.

Know his name , but will remain mum... for his benefit. Do not know him personally but have previously worked with many ZF employee's.

Lucky kid
