SO in Covington still has a gutted downstairs. Trying to decide whether to sell or restore it. She thinks it will happen again because of the unchecked development all over the area. I am tending to agree. The northshore event was not entirely a manmade disaster, but it had a large manmade component. What used to be a beautiful area is turning into a trashy suburb that's prone to flooding, thanks to greed and corruption.

Same out in central. Although it would have flooded alot of central regardless, the unchecked development and a few other issues certainly compounded things

LOL! Who hasn't fired a contractor yet? Flood insurance coverage should include $10,000 in contractor scam/damage/theft.

My neighbors and a coworker both had contractors bail on them. They both bailed after doing half the work which is odd to me.

Didn't use contractors on my house (not like I could've afforded it), but my in-laws had insurance and are just now getting some flooring put in. They're living with us and have been since August (first at my parents' condo, then at our house since we finished construction back in November). Their shite-stain contractor does like an hour's worth of work a week on average.

No insurance here. May have been a blessing from all the contractor disasters I'm hearing....

I bellied up to the bar and got my $30k from FEMA. Will handle the rest of of pocket with lots of labor help from family. Very thankful for that help.

Uhhh no it shouldn't. How about requiring your contractor to carry a bond, insuring they will do what they say they will do. They fall through, their insurance pays you.

Be smart, don't make up rediculous suggestions for a federal government-run insurance program.

residential work is rarely bonded with a payment/performance bond
bond premium is based on contract value and thus is usually quite low, making it difficult for the bonding company to take on the risk

exceptions to this are if the GC has extraordinary volume and/or cash reserves, or if that particular bonding company writes A LOT of houses

moral of the story is never contract with anyone you don't know
and if you know no one, find somebody who does

most bad experiences with contractors result from choosing by price only or choosing under duress. the fact that this guy knowingly defrauded/extorted homeowners under duress (and that he's local) will make eventual punishment that much more severe

I know several contractors about to kill/hang their cabinet subs. Those guys are buried and turning out some shitty cabinets.

I know many in our area that got scammed by the vermin that showed up the first two weeks after the flood with all these pie in the sky promises. Several grabbed that first draw and disappeared. Others skipped out at about 50%. Our issue has been fighting with the mortgage company to get the funds released for the work completed. THOSE are the slimeballs that I would like to have a few words with face to face. It feels like we got penalized for having insurance.

I've done a few restoration jobs since the flood. I'm wrapping up a few now. Once I'm done wrapping these up I'm not doing anymore Every contractor I know is doing the same thing. It's not worth it at all.
