I feel about like you do. My wife and I are solidly upper middle class but I'm not paying a $600+/mo car note

Go check out a Telluride. Full size Luxury SUV for under 50k msrp. Won best car in the world when it debuted.

what do you expect starter homes to cost? you can't find anything move in ready under $300k around me
“Move I’m ready”? Generally means everything has been updated (from what I can tell).
I don’t know where you live but I do know I hear people say similar things near me (suburban Atlanta) and I know it to be false. People think they need more home (and car) than they really do. A family making under 100k a year is “house poor” buying a 300k home. JMHO.

Jesus I must be underpaid. Both of y’all are raking in income in the neighborhood of $150K before kids?
Yep. We've been very lucky in our careers. The bonus and incentive structure changes based on performance and market conditions, but base salaries are both in the $150k range.

You said consulting and tech, without revealing too much what are your job rolls/industry? Is $150k normal pay for people with 5-8 years experience now?
I’m mid 30’s and I topped $100K in my late 20’s (like 28 or 29). I guess the big difference between me and my friends is that I make significantly more than my wife where as they all married women that are either accounts, nurses, etc so they probably have equal income or at least proportional.

You can get a full size Honda SUV new and loaded for an MSRP of around 45-50K
But if you want the Suburban soccer mom status symbol I guess knock yourself out

I'm probably on the low end for someone in my role. I left the Big 4 for a smaller firm that had more long term growth potential.
I do Financial Services Strategy at the Manager/Senior Manager Level. Mrs. H2O is also ex-Big 4 (where we met) and does Privacy and Compliance work for one of the large cloud operations. Her salary is also lower relative to her peers, though they more than make up for that in stock. So her overall comp. is competitive.

Yep, actual price is irrelevant
They only know what they can afford a month and work with dealer to get to that number
That’s exactly the kind of sucker dealerships want. That buyer isn’t even looking at the APR or cares about the term. It’s mind boggling the number of people who are so fixated on the monthly payment they negate everything else, with price of the SUV or truck at the forefront, and end up getting fleeced when everything is said and done.
The Finance guy is always licking his chops when he sees these people walk into the dealership and how the deal is structured, and can freely add points to the APR and sell a shitty warranty for an extra $40-$60/month more, added to the term.

I heard my FIL say this verbatim when talking about buying a new truck. He said as long as his note is "xyz" he was good. My jaw dropped. One, because it's more than I'd ever spend a month and I know they consistently have money issues. Two, because it's the absolute worst way to think about buying a vehicle.
I go in with a number based on what I think the best deal I can get is. I've gotten up to walk out over $200. If we shake hands on 30k, but the finance guy shows me $30,200 I'm not just signing the paper because it's only $5 a month difference on the note. You lied to me, I'm out. They will quickly wipe that $200 off to make the sale though in my experience.
Wife and I are in the 95th percentile of earners last I checked. I've never spent more that $48k on a vehicle and that was a certified pre-owned Audi Q7. Damned nice vehicle and more than enough for two young kids. I just don't get how people are regularly spending twice that.

It's insane what people pay for a vehicle. And some people get new vehicles every other year... like a huge car note for eternity.
