I saw a guy leaning on a tire iron trying to break some lug nuts and just wouldnt budge. I walked up with a three foot length of pipe, and we had those lugs off in a matter of seconds. People just dont understand the concept of leverage.

I made sure both my daughters (no pics assholes), knew how to change a flat tire when I gave then their cars at 16 years old. It was quite entertaining watching them after showing them. But I wouldn't let them leave the house until they could do it on their own.

Maybe he didnt have a section of pipe in his car at the time... do you always carry a big pipe with you?

I've looked at is as something that's so simple that it's not really something you learn, but something you just do.

Every man over 16 should know how to change a tire.

Thanks for reminding me! My daughter didn't have a jack or lug wrench in her trunk, so I gave her mine.

I need to buy these items before I'm a 42 year old man on the side of the road in need of assistance!!!

I don’t get how anyone could not know how to do it. You Jack the car up, and remove 5-6 lug nuts.

The owners manual comes with step by step instructions.

I mean shite I know how to take the tire off the rim and put a patch on the inside to fix it.

I had to wait for my dad to come help me last time I got a flat. Not because I can’t change a tire, but I needed his impact wrench and a hilift due to recessed lugs and the standard jack not being able to lift my Jeep high enough.

Moral of the story, I now have a hilift and an impact wrench

Btw frick those cheap arse jacks cars come with. I suggest everyone go to autozone and buy a small floor jack to keep in the trunk or toolbox. It’s much easier to deal with

Long story short, one of my female coworker friends (no pics) told me that the guy she's dating blew a tire on the way to work this morning, and she feels bad that she can't help him. I asked her, "does he not have a spare?" She goes, "yes, but he's on the side of the road." I said, "so he doesn't know how to change a tire?" She huffed, "why does that even matter?"

Am I an a-hole for implying that this dude's manliness should be questioned for not being able to change a tire? Or are we just sadly headed in that direction as a generation?

Nothing in your story implies that the guy doesn’t know how to change a tire. The girlfriend, just like you, are making a big deal out of nothing.

No. Every self-respecting man should know how to change a tire. It's not difficult at all.

Unfortunately, some don't teach their sons (or daughters) how to do that. It's ludicrous.

I will admit I had a hell of a time once getting the spare out from underneath vehicle. At night, no manual, and no freaking flashlight because, why would I have one when I really need it? Finally found the hole and lowered it.

Yes he should absolutely know how to do it and actually do it when able to.

However, you need to not be stupid too. I had a tire blow out on I 75 south of the Atlanta airport a few years ago. Traffic was heavy and it was pitch dark. I could have changed the tire and was prepared to do so, but I called the HERO unit as backup to make sure I didnt get killed. He ended up changing it for me and I was just as happy.

changed many tires, but at some point, the risk isn't worth it. There are way too many distracted drivers, and it's too easy for a car to fall of the Jack.

There are distracted drivers, which is why you pull as far off the roadway as practical and finally have a valid reason to use hazards.
The part about the car falling off the jack tells me you haven't actually changed many tires, or your just never learned how to do it correctly. I've never once had a vehicle fall off a jack. And even if it did happen while changing a tire, why would it matter. You should never get under a vehicle that is on just a jack, and you don't have to get under a vehicle while changing a tire.

I know how to change a tire but I’m not doing it on the side of the road. I pay for AAA so I don’t have to

FTFY. No one should be able to drive a car without knowing how to do stuff like that.

And as for that dude: watch a 2min YouTube video and learn how to do it. It's not exactly a difficult task.

Agreed.

I have had two flat tires in the last 5 years, and both times, AAA arrived within 20 minutes and it was a done deal.. i know how to change one, and changed several back in my teens and 20s (I’m in my 40s now)- but it was always a pain in the arse, and took just as long, if not longer than it does for AAA to show up- why in the hell would i disregard the membership fee i pay, and do it myself?
