I know that back patio because I’ve broken into that house twice. Not to rob someone but to save their asses.
Edit: redacted because I’m pretty sure I know who this is, and the person in question was NOT the OP.

You say that, but when I replied to his first post about the.22 saying I've never owned a gun because I never felt the need for one, but now things have changed in my life and I would like some advice, he responded with how he grew up on a farm and we are all fricked.
And then brought up my join date and, apparently, it's shocking I don't own a gun because I joined this board in 2006.
I'm not sure what one has to do with the other.
Then he followed up with this because I said that my girlfriend would probably feel more comfortable with a first round of bird shot before using a lethal option after that if needed.

This is retarded. If you were a real man with a set of nuts, this is where you tell them what to do.
How's that trying to be helpful?
And this is coming from a 44 year old who lives in the suburbs, trying to act like he's some sort of John Wick type badass.
The most confrontation this guy has ever had is when he yells at the bartender for cutting him off.

Unless, of course, their willingness to harm you isn’t non-lethal.
Your “second chance” at a more lethal response may not happen.

Reminds me of my uncle that served in WWII. My aunt woke him one night and told him she thought someone was at the back door trying to jimmy the lock. He grabbed a coach shotgun he kept in the corner of the bedroom and went to the investigate. As soon as he reached the back door, it popped open and the guy took one look at him and turned and shagged arse. No shots fired. Afterwards my aunt told him the encounter must have scared him to death. He said during the war he faced Germans face to face in house to house fighting and that scared him to death, the guy he faced at the back door was no German soldier. My aunt said that was the only time he ever mentioned his WWII experience.

guide me on guns for home defense and please include the pros and cons.
You are new to guns, so stay away from automatics. You want a revolver. Shorter barrel to prevent it being taken from you. .357 has great stopping power but is likely to much for a novice. Go .38 with defense rounds. ( gun store will know what these are)
Once you get this go to gun range to practice once a month for 6 month. Then every other month. Run a target back 15’ and fire center Mass. another drill is to load only 3 rounds in your gun. Set it down on platform in front of you at range….. practice quickly picking it up and putting 3 quick rounds in target.
Learn to clean your gun and keep it clean. Take a gun safety course.
Store your gun within reach while you sleep

Ask me how many times this has happened to me in Prairieville.

He's trying to tell you that you are being too emotional about this. If someone breaks in, you want to put them in the grave.
There is no perfect self defense weapon. You need to go to the range with a friend who owns a bunch of different pistols, and figure out what you like. You typically don't want a caliber that will go through a wall.
Paul Harrell (RIP) has excellent videos on YouTube on self defense.

On the gun front. Look at some pistol caliber carbines

Again: I have no qualms killing someone if I feel like I need to. Hell, id easily torture someone if I felt like it would save a loved one.
I'm not asking for me. I'm asking for my SO. And I know her. She would hesitate if it meant killing someone, but wouldn't if the first option doesn't require killing. Second shot can be lethal, but first shot being lethal would make her double guess her actions.
That's an understandable response and thought process.
I've also said that she may change her mindset once the baby comes home, because then she's not going to be thinking about her safety, only about protecting the baby.
Stop focusing on me and what you think I should do in these situations. It's not about me.

Well, now you have an excuse to go get, at the very least, a 12 gauge pump. Racking that sumbitch is noise enough to run a crackhead off. Protect your girls, New Daddy. You got this.

If that baby is in danger, I imagine your wife will have no issue blasting chunks out of an intruder. Get her the 00 for that shotgun.

ETA: And let's get one thing straight (this is something that's bothered me for a while): the first priority is not to kill, it's to end the threat. A shell filled with rock salt can accomplish that just as well as lethal ammunition can.
The first rule of owning a gun is don’t point it at anything you aren’t ready to kill. It’s not a pretty fact but it is an important one. Doesn’t matter what kind of gun, what type of ammo. If you own a gun - if you point it at something - if you pull the trigger - be prepared to deal with the consequences of killing whatever it is. Plain and simple.
It’s not a “threat deterrent”, it’s a lethal weapon. If you want a “threat deterrent”, get a taser or pepper spray or something.

I mean, you know how crime works. It is reiterated on this site to provide your own protection.
You chose to ignore that advice for two decades. That seems unwise at this juncture.

I don’t know him, or his story.
At the end of the day, you need to protect you and your family.
A handgun makes the most sense to me.
Congrats on your little girl.
Keep her safe.

Thank you for suggesting a shotgun.
And the fact that I am now a father is the reason why I am considering a gun, after a lifetime of not even considering owning a gun.
I've been up all night waiting to see if this guy returns, even though I know he isn't. But I can't get comfortable knowing that he actually tried to open the door after looking in, because I know that he most likely looked in the window at my girl when she went to the kitchen to get a drink and something to eat.
According to the time stamp, he showed up 20 minutes after we went out there to change over the laundry and put the camera back in place after charging it. That was about the time she went downstairs to get heat up leftovers.
Now I'm in full protection mode, and Im worrying about her when I'm not home and what would be best for her to use. That's why I keep asking about birdshot. I know this girl and she'll hesitate using lethal force, but won't hesitate to shoot a non lethal option first. She'll use the lethal shot as a last resort (second shot).
ETA: and again, that'll probably change when the baby is home. She'll readily kill someone to protect that baby.

My rule of thumb is to never live in a neighborhood that is within walking or bike-riding distance from the ghetto. And the Garden District is one of those places.

What you don't know can't hurt you. Let her see you load it with what she wants. Then switch to the right shite. She doesn't sound like the type who going to be doing ammo checks.
When it comes to keeping your family safe, a little deceit is better than the alternative.
