re: Alaskan Cruise recs

Rear facing aft balcony rooms are generally highly regarded vs either port or starboard. The only thing is part of your balcony might be visible to higher decks because of the slope of the back of the boat. You can study pics of your boat to get an idea.
I’m at 73%. Will be sad when it is over.

We did the Princess Discovery the last week of May, 2024 and loved it. I’ll break down some considerations for you:
1. We did a 7 night RT Seattle b/c of Southwest points and because of limited time off. You only get a taste of Alaska with a 7 night that stays down South, and we knew once we retire we would do a long 10 to 14 night cruise tour that includes the land portion at Denali. If you have the time and the money and are only going to do one Alaskan cruise, then I’d do a longer cruise tour that starts with the land portion then goes southbound so easier flight home at the end.
2. Cruise line: Only some cruise lines have permits to go into Glacier Bay [holland, princess, disney off the top of my head] Check for others. On our GB day, you sail into pristine wilderness for several hours with no other ships. You sail up to several glaciers and do the 360 spin a few times. We had a balcony and binoculars and sat there all day drinking bloody Mary’s, then champagne, [delivered to our room] enjoying the views. Favorite day of the trip. We love Celebrity but picked Princess solely because it went to GB.
3. Ports times and dock locations: Pay attention to time in ports on the itineraries — even though the ship may stop there, it could be wonky hours — you want the longest, optimal times. Many people don’t look at this and get screwed. Also, do some research on where your ship docks. HAL and Princess have the best dock locations b/c they’ve been there the longest — for some other brands, you get a less optimum location and have to bus to town.
4. Ports themselves: We loved Skagway — such a cute, tiny town. We walked to the Skagway Brewing Co for lunch, toured the free Gold Rush museum in town, then did the White Pass Railway which I highly recommend. In Juneau, we did a combo whale watching/Mendenhall glacier tour which was nice. If you treat the whale watching part like a “pretty trip on a boat in nature” you won’t be disappointed when you don’t really see the whales up close — it’s hit or miss and out of the control of the boat captains really. In Ketchikan, it rained like it always does and made for a miserable day. There is a FREE town shuttle that we hopped on and did a round-trip just to see the town.
5. Princess Discovery: there were many things Princess did right … a naturalist gave talks every day, they had Alaskan beer tables and Bloody Mary bars set up in atrium most of the trip, an Iditarod champion came on board with his puppies and gave a talk, etc… the entertainment was really good and I really appreciated all the live music everywhere. The food in the MDR and the buffet was not good at all. Specialty restaurants were very good to excellent — Rudi’s Catch especially. [I had made reservations on the app months before.]. I also loved the medallion you get which is basically a gps locator. Using that and the app, you could order a drink including specialty coffees anywhere on the ship and it would be delivered to you.
6. Timing — we picked last week of May b/c we wanted to see snow on the mountains, less rain, and fewer kids. First week of June would be good too. You see more animals as the summer goes along, but lose the snow, gain more crowds and kids, and it gets rainier and rainier.

Greek Cruise port advice needed

I’m taking a cruise next September on the Celebrity Xcel. It stops in Santorini, Ephesus, Mykonos, Rhodes, and Valletta Malta and ends in Barcelona.
I have an excursion I’m happy with for Santorini, but am not sure what to do in the other towns.
For Mykonos, I thought we would do a quick excursion to Delos then take the public bus to the beaches and do a “beach walk” from Platys Gialos to Paradise Beach, stopping at a few beach bars. I just read the beaches aren’t really nice so maybe we should just walk around the “old town” area.
For Rhodes, I have booked a “medieval walking tour” which includes the palace, then we were going to walk around Old Town and eat lunch there.
I have no idea what to do in Ephesus or Malta. Any suggestions or criticisms of the above plans are welcomed.
Also, we will have one full day in Athens pre-cruise and one full day in Barcelona post-cruise if you have any suggestions there. Thanks!

re: Cruise line reccomendations?

If you have kids, Royal Caribbean Icon Class [fantastic] or Disney Fantasy [the newer Disney ships are poorly reviewed]. If you don’t have kids, Celebrity Edge Class ships [going on Xcel in two weeks, been on the rest and Ascent was our favorite].

We were there yesterday. The only paved sidewalk I saw was a 100 yard stretch from parking lot to entrance. After that, the walkways are covered in large rock-sized gravel or dirt/grass. It was extremely difficult pushing a stroller with kids through the gravel. And there are some small hills here or there.

I’ve always had a fondness for the ob- words … obviate, obdurate, obfuscate, obstreperous. I pull one out every once in a while and impress my husband.

The Suneater series is all time for me too in addition to The Three Body Problem series. I just can’t find anything as good as either of these [although they are obviously very different from each other].
Those Sam’s brownies were absolutely the best, but I haven’t seen them in the store in years.

My USNA grad navy pilot son sent me this. He thought it was great and so do I.

I pay 2000 a month for my husband and myself, and that’s for a high deductible plan with a $6000 premium. You must work for a big business that can negotiate good deals with an insurance company. Insurance sucks for a private payer.
Elbow room, elbow room, gotta gotta get you some elbow room. It’s the moon or bust, in God we trust, there’s a new land up there!

I can assure you King doesn’t feel bad about this at all. His fake apology is forced by a PR guy. This liberal, trash, a-hole has no capability of self-reflection and this won’t change any of his beliefs.

I would add Santa Maria to that list. Absolutely no foot traffic, not near any trashy areas and no apartment complexes nearby nor will ever be built nearby. Lots of young families moving in. Grocery stores nearby and easy to get on interstate.
Disquiet Gods, sun eater series book six. Complex writing. This is not pablum for the science fiction masses and can be a challenge to read. I’m having to reread sentences and paragraphs sometimes, but boy do I love this series. It’s really breathtaking in scope, both temporally and geographically.
…and I forgot to add, for St. Maarten, we had an excursion booked with Billy Bones, but the boat broke that morning so we had to make a new plan on the fly. We hopped in a taxi and went straight to the Sunset Bar at the airport beach. Walk to your right and there is a bar at the end of the restaurant where you can get buckets of beer from. Put our stuff on the sand [don’t need to rent the chairs to get a spot on the sand] and enjoyed the water for a while. Then went back to the restaurant and ate lunch. Hung up there for a while and back to ship via taxi. We would absolutely do it again. Lots of fun.
